What Should Christians Tell Their Children About Santa Claus?
by Rich Deem

Introduction

What is truth?

Many people think that ideas like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are just cute rituals of childhood and that Christian children should not be deprived of "magic and fun" of Christmas or Easter. What is a Christian parent to tell their children about Santa Claus?

Rich Deem

The story of Santa Claus goes back many centuries and has become a staple of Christmas shopping (at least in the malls and department stores). Should Christian parents go along with the "fun" of Christmas by telling their children that the presents come from Santa Claus? There are Christian websites that advocate including Santa Claus as part of a Christian's celebration of Christmas.1 However, as Christians, we are to practice our faith as instructed to do so in the Bible. What does the Bible say that can help us discern what to tell our children about Santa Claus?

The Bible and Santa Claus

The Bible has nothing to say about Santa Claus, since that figure now proclaimed in December is a fictional character (but loosely based upon the real life character Saint Nicholas, a third century bishop). However, the Bible has a huge amount to say about the truth. A more thorough examination of this topic can be found on our page, Why Do Christians Lie So Much? Truth and Christianity. The Bible claims to be true throughout and that all God has said is true.2 The Bible also claims that the gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ is true3 and the way of salvation.4 In fact, God is called the "God of truth."5 As Christians, when we receive Jesus we become new creations, established in truth in the likeness of God.6 The Christian puts on spiritual "armor," which includes the belt of truth.7 The Christian is to "buy truth,"8 "love truth,"9 and rejoice in the truth."10 The Christian is to be established in the truth,11 to love in truth and deed (not just lip service),12 and correct those who stray from the truth.13 The Christian is to think deeply about things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, excellent, and worthy of praise.14 The Christian church is to be the "pillar of the truth."15 We are instructed not to lie,16 and lying is strongly condemned.17 Testifying falsely against another person is specifically prohibited in the Ten Commandments,18 and is punishable with the same punishment the accused would have received (including falsely testifying in a capital crime).19 So, lying about Santa Claus is not in line with biblical theology.

My experience growing up

I was raised in a secular home, where religion was never an issue. Like most secular parents in the 1950's and 1960's, there was no issue about whether to tell the truth about Santa Claus. My parents "went along with the program," telling us the story about Santa Claus traveling around the world delivering presents to good boys and girls. However, since we didn't have a fireplace, they just left the back door open on Christmas Eve. When I found out that the story was not true, I was incensed. It wasn't that I was disappointed that the story wasn't true, it was that I felt my parents had betrayed my trust by lying to me. My wife felt the same way, so we decided we would never lie to our children, even before they had been born.

Bucking the system

As Christians, my wife and I emphasized the birth of Jesus in our home and told our children the true story of Christmas. We explained to them that we (not Santa) gave them presents at Christmas because God gave us the most important present at Christmas—Jesus. The tradition of giving presents was begun by the wise men, who gave presents to Jesus following His birth.20 No, we didn't go to the mall and get pictures of our children sitting on some stranger's lap. Our children grew up knowing that we loved them and that Jesus loved them and that He was the reason for the season. When they asked about Santa Claus, we simply told them the truth. For our youngest son, we didn't need to. At one point when we were in the car, Mark and his brothers were having a conversation about Santa, with Mark insisting that he was real. His brothers set him straight!

What will my parents think?

A lot of couples dread bucking the trend regarding family traditions. For this reason, they think that they can't change the tradition of lying to children about Santa Claus. Since both my wife and I had grown up with the Santa tradition, we talked about what our parents reaction might be. We decided that we would not bring it up to our families until they asked. When that happened, we just explained that we wanted to emphasize the story of Jesus. There wasn't a lot of pushback.

Conclusion Top of page

The Christian is to live a life that is established in truth - truth in speaking, in loving, and truth in all one does and thinks. For this reason, we chose, as parents, not to lie to our children about Santa Claus. It worked out well, since our children knew that we didn't lie to them about Santa Claus or anything else—including our faith in Jesus Christ. Sometimes it is better that some family traditions be allowed to die.
