It is one thing to intellectually know the truth about God and His salvation. It is another to accept it and actively follow Jesus as He leads you. An intellectual acceptance of the authority of Jesus as Lord and Savior will not save you from the wrath of God. Even the demons know these facts - and shudder.1 In order to be justified before God, you must believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord.2 An empty confession of faith will not be accepted.3 In your confession of faith, you must repent4 of your former lifestyle and follow Jesus as He leads you.5

References:
  1. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder. (James 2:19)
  2. That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. (Romans 10:9-10)
  3. "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'" (Matthew 7:23)
  4. For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation; but the sorrow of the world produces death. (2 Corinthians 7:10)
  5. Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. (Matthew 16:24)
"If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there shall My servant also be; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him." (John 12:26)
