By these "birds" perhaps God was referring to the pterosaurs, and that large land mammals didn't start to form until later (which science has confirmed). Also, by the time the first true birds emerged - the first true mammals were all small "creeping" things.

From what I've recently learned that according to the Bible - we either stay in limbo (like a very long sleep) after we die or stay in a temporary Heaven or Hell (makes more sense to me - given the near death experiences many have), until judgment day..
