Re: Evil and God (Been there, done that)
How am I doing? If God is omniscient, He would know of how to end evil. Since he would also be able and willing as his godly status demands, there is no reason to believe why He would not act. Evidently, doing nothing to resolve this issue is His choice and, since doing nothing implies that He's unw...

Re: Evil and God (Been there, done that)
I like Jac's argument. I also noticed that he has a bad definition of good ("perfectly strong", "perfectly knowledge", etc). After all, the word perfect implies some kind of limit. For example, a ten milliliter flask is imperfectly full if it's only 9.90 mL, but perfectly full if...

Evil and God (Been there, done that)
I'm going to make a wild assumption and assume that this discussion has been done to death already. But, whatever. Anyway, I came across this on a different forum: 1) If a being wants to end evil but is incapable of doing so, then it is not omnipotent. 2) If a being is able to end evil but is unwill...

Infinity and beyond!
I'm sure most people are familiar with the Kalam Cosomological Argument (Everything that has a beginning has a cause; The universe began; therefore the universe has a cause), which is based on the idea that the universe is not infinitely old . I'm e-discussing this with someone, and I'm not sure if ...

Re: Abortion: Function versus Essence
A lot of my argumentation above still stands which of him arbitrarily applying certain criteria. Why not just say what is biologically human is a person? Why add new criteria? Does he support infanticide up to a certain age when they display intelligence, self-awareness and a conscience? Sadly, yes...

Re: Abortion: Function versus Essence
The problem is, though, is that he seesm to have an all or nothing concept of it. You etiher have some brain function and the capability for love, rationalization, etc, (which makes one a person) or one does not, (which means not a person). I understand, and I purposefully wrote what I did regardle...

Re: Abortion: Function versus Essence
Er, anyone have any counterarguments to that? The concept that humanness does not revolve around the degree of, for example, brainwaves, but rather the absolute there-is-or-there-is-not brainwaves. Another quote: Pro-choice advocates, that since there's actual evidence that fetuses possess none of t...

Abortion: Function versus Essence
AnbortMan, haven't been on here in ages. What's up, people. Anyway, gotten myself into a debate with abortion. In short, the main argument now is functionalism versus essense, whether or not functionalilty equals essence or whether essence dictates function. Being an Essencist (?) I take the anti-ab...

I'll try those arguments out, then, Gman.
By the way:
By the way:
I forgot to do the quote boxes, but the one arguing that God doesn't hate us is me, and the unquoted material is the other guy.Forge wrote:Anway, look. First quote is me, the following is the guy I'm debating. Help plz k thx.

Free Will and Evil
In a debate, I've been holding the position that evil is needed for free will. No wait, let me reiterate: I say that the possibility to choose evil is a needed component of free will, whether this evil is actualized or not. I say that if there is no way to choose evil (Rather-poor-example: no tree i...

Tower of Babel = God hates us
I've been debating this guy, and he got me thinking about this. Basically, he says that the language-scrambling that went on in the Tower of Babel thing proves that God is either malevolent or frightened of humanity. Anway, look. First quote is me, the following is the guy I'm debating. Help plz k t...

New Methods of Stem Cells
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,210078,00.html
Basically, they're trying methods to harvest embryonic stem cells without killing the embryo.
How does this square with abortion? Is it still the killing of a human being--if the cell is considered a person--or is it "all right".
