Re: Pagan Christianity
Spent a little more time thinking about it, and realized that maybe you're right, Jac, I am not being helpful in this discussion. May the Lord of all grace and peace continue to be present here as He guides this discussion. Thank you all for allowing me to join in with you, and am hoping you will fo...

Re: Pagan Christianity
okay, since we meet on the idea that "authority" needs a definition, then am interested in hearing how you would define "authority." How would you define "elders"? What is the "authority" that you are talking about? What would that look like in a real life sit...

Re: Pagan Christianity
For me there is a difference between discussion and arguing. I have, in the past, had the stamina for arguing, but have found that the mental and emotional energy that it takes is more costly than the benefits it seems to provide. For me discussion includes benefit for both sides, so now I am pretty...

Re: Pagan Christianity
Gotcha Bart, and I agree. 7% is a pretty hugh number, and it does speak to the trends Barna has been tracking. Certainly, as you said, it's a mixed bag but the main thought is that this appears to be a serious trend. I am really interested in seeing where it goes.

Re: Pagan Christianity
Just read the Newsweek article and...hmmmm. A little bit cynical. Micro churches (like micro brews) are not, I am thinking, what Viola had in mind when he began writing.

Re: Pagan Christianity
Thanks Bart, am going to read that Newsweek article as soon as I finish this reply. To Jac, my main source is a pastor and author named John Temple Bristol. I could certainly bring other theologians to the table, but am actually not all that interested, to tell the truth. I've been in these discussi...

Re: Pagan Christianity
I'm not sure how to use the quote box in this forum, so will just quote you this old fashioned way, Jac: "What is this Greek word for "head" in the "normal" sense? Are you aware that the word used in Eph 5:23 is κεφαλη (kephale), the normal word for head? It has everything t...

Re: Pagan Christianity
I thought this was a great quote that speaks to some of what we're talking about in terms of leadership: "If you want to build a ship, don't herd people together to collect wood, and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." Anto...

Re: Pagan Christianity
Gotcha, Bart, makes sense. I actually would not be that interested in "getting into it" over this particular doctrine of the trinity, but I can see what you're saying, that the implications of the trinity (whatever view is held) has the potential to drive one's view in how human relationsh...

Re: Pagan Christianity
The discussion of the trinity, I think, should be tangential to this discussion. The eternal subordination of the Son to the Father is a teaching currently being used to support the hierarchical approach to human relationships (such as the family and the church), but it really is only about thirty y...

Re: Pagan Christianity
Well, Jac, the use of the word "head" in the Ephesians passage, speaking of the husband to the wife, is more in the way of "head of the line," rather than the word for one's actual head. There is a Greek word for that, but it isn't the word Paul used. "Head of the line,"...

Re: Pagan Christianity
Since "headship" is not a word found in the New Testament, how would you define it? Honest ask. I hear this word used an awful lot, I think sometimes it ends up being user-defined. What would you say it means, and how do you come by your definition? I find in the relationship between a hus...

Re: Pagan Christianity
I don't have Greek or Hebrew, so I have to trust the scholars I go to for the meanings. Even if I were a native Greek or Hebrew speaker, I think I would still need to trust the scholars who have made a study of the ancient variants of these languages as even in my own native toungue, English, I find...

Re: Pagan Christianity
Bart , am really enjoying your working through these verses. Thank you for applying all that you've learned of Greek to this, I am really learning from it. I keep on being reminded that everything goes back to what's happening in the heart. behavior that is enforced from the outside may be efficien...
