Re: The historical evidence for Christ
The earthquake does not surprise me. I watched a documentary recently, and there is archeological evidence that the walls of Jericho have been rebuilt countless times (during one period of time it was rebuilt 30 times). It is stated that earthquakes can be felt in that part of the world on a daily b...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
Well, let's have your a posteriori proof that Jesus is God! You still have no presented it to me! You have to make up your mind whether we are talking about the existence of Jesus (a man), or the existence of Jesus (a god-entity). Therein lies part of the confusion. Are we debating about a god, or ...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
POTENTIAL ENTITIES most definitely implies - potential as meaning non-existent . Don't mince words... No, potential as in the class of things that can't be guaranteed to not exist. I understand what you are saying; I was trying to paraphrase the concept another way (here I was trying for less forma...

Re: The historical evidence for Christ
Let me just say that for now, it appears you have two classes of accounts: those that portray an entity who is either a man or a deity, and those that portray allegedly supernatural or miraculous events associated with the entity (or assert that the entity is a deity).

Re: Morals without god/the bible
Why do you think the Flying Spaghetti Monster is supposed to disprove the existence of God? Because that is the premise of your argument.... No, this is not the premise of my argument. I was showing you the conclusion of one specific argument you made (localized to the context of that specific asse...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
Get real. The Flying Spaghetti Monster is a classic example of attempting to make an analogy that the existence of God is as likely as any other imaginary entiity that someone wants to imagine. It's used routinely by atheists as an agent of mockery. When someone makes an appeal to that it it moves ...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
I think that it is fair to say that there is more a posteriori evidence for the existence of Jesus than the Flying Spaghetti Monster. But you can't rule out the possibility of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, unless you think the ONLY knowledge that may be had is of that which is observable. I will ad...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
In your own words here you draw out the kind of comparisons I presumed you to be making anyway. I am not making trying to make a comparison. What is the comparison that you think I am trying to make? Furthermore, we perform metaphysics even without knowing it every day. For example, how do you know...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
When this forum suggests a given entity exists (God), it does not open up to any possible conceivable entity. This forum has not provided history of a spaghetti monster or unicorns. It has provided history and evidence from the bible and that bible refers to the person Jesus Christ. With that said,...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
For the morality thing, I think that what I am trying to understand is how anyone could possibly say whether or not some other person was acting from a moral decision. In other words, a human being is a sort of black box, where we can observe their external behaviors, but do not have access to their...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
Yeah, the thing I am trying to discern with morality is that there are cases where an individual is conflicted about choosing between two mutually exclusive courses of action, then utilizes a value judgement in order to resolve that conflict and commit to a course of action. To me, that is when an i...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
>I'd rather rely on comparisons between known likes (local design) than get frustated by it's limitations... You quoted my opinion, and then pointed out that it was my opinion. That's why I prefaced the statement with "I'd rather rely on" It was supposed to be a cue that I was departing f...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
Cognitive psychological research has shown that people tend to seek out, recall and interpret evidence in a manner that sustains their beliefs. This applies to everyone, not just Christians. I note you also mention "horrible scientists," but your target is clear. And your point is simply ...

Re: Morals without god/the bible
I said life lacks meaning. Objectively or subjectively? Now, prove it. In other words: science starts by observing small, localized changes while religion attempts to provide a single account for everything in one broad stroke. What's your point? Let me suggest that you peruse the main board. And r...
