Re: Black and white or shades of Grey?
You've asked if the matter of sin is "black and white or shades of grey." Your question circumscribes the answer. It is black and white; it is grey. It is grey because it is black and white. Morality is absolute. Grey areas exist because sometimes those absolutes come into conflict with on...

Re: Why did Jesus call himself the Son of Man?
Yes, calling Him the "Son of Man" does affirm his humanity, but it is also understood as a reference to a prophecy from Daniel 7:13-14. “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and wa...

Re: Socialism
Exactly right. We are, each of us, to love God and love our neighbor as we love ourselves. This means caring for those who are in need of assistance -- giving to and serving the poor. Essentially, making sacrifices for those less fortunate than ourselves. It takes very little love to take money from...

Re: Sigmund Freud's Future of an Illusion
Also, as a therapist, I think the fact that this guy structured his entire philosophy class on demonstrating that atheism is true sends up big red flags psychologically. "Methinks the lady doth protest too much." The prof desperately wants atheism to be true.

Re: Sigmund Freud's Future of an Illusion
I know this is late and the class is over, but I have a somewhat unique perspective so I thought I'd reply; I am Actually in my third year of a doctoral program in clinical psychology. What's more, my program is quite psychodynamic in orientation (influenced in various ways by the Freudian tradition...

Re: Two kinds of morality
I'm reminded of Dostoevksi here. It's been several years, but I seem to remember some rather scorching words that were obvious indictments of Marx and Nietsche in Crime and Punishment . More to the point, though -- one of my takeaways from The Brothers Karamazov was that this is a fallen place fille...

Re: Deconversion story of notable apologist's daughter
It seems to me her question gets to the heart of what was discussed in the uber-long thread about whether or not old testament laws are still binding on Christians today. Not to dredge that up, but I think the answer, as Jlay hinted at (I think), is that violation of the old testament laws was unlaw...

Re: Making the right choice
Charles, Thank you for presenting your thoughtful, heartfelt questions to us, and for your gracious responses. Please understand that we are most often inundated not with sincere questions from sincere seekers, but with attacks from interlocutors; and that after a while we can sometimes grow hyper-v...

Re: Legitimacy Of The Bible
There is no reason for someone to create a fake birth certificate for someone who existed 3000 years ago. But there's plenty reason for someone to make a book that says if you do something bad, you get in trouble, no matter how much you covered it up. First, it may be worthwhile to consider what it...

Re: Actions vs Words
Elaborating on what Rick said... Confession and contrition is not a means of redemption, it is part of a larger reorientation of the heart and mind toward God; it is the acknowledgment of one's falling woefully short of God's glory and perfection, and of one's desperate need for a savior; it is the ...

Re: The Law
I've spent the last few days or so casually skimming over this year-long thread, so please forgive me if I go over old ground (although that seems to be what one does in this thread  ). Also, I feel I'm probably a bit out of my depth here in terms of being able to remember applicable parts...

Re: Sin of Thought?
First off, according to Freudian theory, we are not responsible for out thoughts or our dreams, so if one is incapable of halting these dreams in which let's say one dreams of sexual sin, why is one obliged to go and ask God for forgiveness? Thanks Did Freud believe that because it was true, or did...

Re: Atheists: Do they have legitimate reasons for their doub
Ukrainianlys, You asked if atheists have legitimate reasons for their unbelief, or if they are just lying or trying to gain approval from the masses. This makes me wonder what you mean by "legitimate." If you mean "correct" or "strong" arguments, I would have to say I g...

Re: President 2012
Don't go putting words in my mouth, now. I dont think American decline is due to direct punishment by God. That's ridiculous. What I mean is that there are natural consequences to sin. Yes, slavery was a horrible evil in this country-- and it had horrible consequences for our country that reverberat...
