Re: "Everything is God's fault."

So the only way to see evil is through the prism of your own personal standard. And given that personal standards differ from one person to the next, then so does the definition of evil. I presume you would agree with that, correct? Eh... kinda. I agree that we can only see evil through our persona...

Re: Apologetics class.

looks like your URL isn't working... but yeah, I'll take a look @ the board purpose and discussion guidelines. If I'm going counter-purpose to the forums by starting up debates, I shall politely remove myself :egeek:

Re: "Everything is God's fault."

So either God exists according to your set of personal standards or he doesn't exist at all, is that it? Well, I'm stuck using my own set of personal standards cuz I don't really have anyone else's to go on. If I did, then that would become my new set of standards and I'd be right back to square on...

Re: Where the founding fathers atheist

Well, jefferson was a deist. He still gets to use creation-story theology, so it's fine for him to say that our rights are endowed by a creator; doesn't necessarily follow that he went with any other parts of the christian doctrine. I'm not sure that Franklin or Jefferson would be considering religi...

Re: Apologetics class.

As far as understanding the atheist perspective. Well, that is not one thing. Not all atheists are like you. Good point. That's actually one of the things we always stress ourselves, that we're not a unified group. Should have remembered that when I made my suggestion. As for debates where I...

Re: "Everything is God's fault."

On the way out he sees this homeless guy with dirty long hair and immediately runs back into the barbershop and tells the barber, look this guy has long hair, that is proof that barbers don't exit. The barber says of course we exist, after all here I am, the problem is guys with long hair just don'...

Re: "Everything is God's fault."

And just in case some ignorant, incompetent, intellectually dishonest individual pops up and accuses me of attacking Christianity or whatever, I'll be happy to lay out the theodicy that I think makes sense if I am asked to. I'm asking. Perhaps another thread might be good for that one? I'm kinda cu...

Re: "Everything is God's fault."

I hadn't heard, actually. And in case your ultimate goal is to deny God, I don't know if you've heard but the problem of evil and suffering in the world is actually a strong argument FOR the existence of an omni^3 God. Nope, never heard that one before, but I'd like to hear it now. How does that wor...

Re: "Everything is God's fault."

Well, which would you rather have: appendixes that explode occasionally and kill people, or appendixes that don't explode occasionally and kill people? I'm using the standard of "pain and suffering are bad, happiness and joy are good" but using basically any standard you want, I'm pretty s...

Re: Apologetics class.

As an atheist it's probably not my place to say, but might want to bring in an atheist perspective in on it too. If there's any non-theist groups in your area, invite them to have a debate with your class at some point. Maybe even invite them to join a class at some point, and in exchange bring your...

God's Omnipotence and the Problem of Evil

Perhaps I can clear this up a bit, as I'm quite a fan of the problem of evil myself (that's basically what you're getting at, right?). So, even before we get started on the POE (ironic that it spells "poe" :egeek: ), I should prolly say what kind of deity it argues against. POE works to th...

Re: Where the founding fathers atheist

Yep, many were deists (jefferson, franklin for sure) and rather disgruntled with christianity. Maybe some were atheists, but they didn't call themselves such. and I'm sure some were quite religious. Either way, the religious ones were diverse enough that they didn't want any single religion getting ...

Re: Good argument against Deism?

Anyone know of a good argument against deism? It seems to answer the presuppositional problems of where laws of logic and natural laws come from ...I'd appreciate any help, thanks! Best argument against deism is that Jesus came to earth in the flesh!! Well, if he did, and he were divine, that'd cer...

Re: Please Introduce Yourself Here

Well, I'm happycynic. College student in the midwest, going for engineering. Atheist, and have been for quite a while. Spend most of my disposable online forum-time on Friendly Atheist Forums, where one of your guys recently popped up looking for some discussion in our side of the fence. I go by the...
