180 Movie review/discussion

Not really sure where this would go but I guess this forum should do, since it has to do with abortion. A group of people came to the University earlier this semester handing out these "180 Movie" documentaries by Ray Comfort. Since I seriously had never heard of him or his documentary, I ...

Re: Movie Review: Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed

Right. I'm not saying that everything is fake in the video. There probably are isolated incidents of discrimination that ought to be investigated, but once again if you are valuable to a university and have a good research track record and make money for your school, you will not be turned down for ...

Re: Gay Rights

Old post but still relevant. "Does this not violate your favorite term "seperation of church and state"?" Actually, it doesn't at all. Supports it really. The law means that religion is to be kept out of decisions and laws, that religion can not become compulsory, there can be no...

Re: marriage hall

While some people have questioned the definitions of words and so on, I think the issue with most homosexuals and homosexuals isn't the word "marriage" itself. The real issue comes with the legal and societal benefits of it. There are a ton of medical and monetary impacts that getting marr...

Re: Movie Review: Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed

I was really disappointed by this documentary...I'm not going to run a full review on it, but there are a few really troubling bits that really do make it too biased in my opinion to really be considered anything beyond propaganda. The first thing is the overarching assumption/claim that ID proponen...

Re: Evolution/ID/Creationism in the Classroom

Well, I guess just one more reason my school rocks lol...I'll admit some of the profs individually are a little critical of ID beyond just the scientific aspects of it, but overall I think the University is respectful and does a good job on that level. Again, we absolutely learn evolution as the sta...

Re: Evolution/ID/Creationism in the Classroom

[quote="Proinsias"]Where a biology education is compulsory then evolution should be part of it. It's one of the most influential theories of the past few hundred years, permeates much of biology and gives it a common language. The level of support for evolution within the scientific commun...

Re: Religion gives rise to civilization

Well, that is basically my thinking. The basic curiosities about people's lives developed over time into ways of explaining it (religion) which led to the growth of the breadth of our curiosity. So I guess our ideas aren't all that different after all.

No, you can post whatever you want on here...well, anything legal. If it's free and public, or you quote and cite it properly, it's fine.

Re: Evolution/ID/Creationism in the Classroom

I understand your point, but that still doesn't explain much as far as why evolution is too philosophical to teach in schools. All science is a philosophy to some degree, yes. Science is called science because it follows a set list of criteria (the philosophy of science, I guess). But saying that we...

Re: Religion gives rise to civilization

It's not that I'm saying they just wanted knowledge, but humans are naturally curious in my opinion. When people today see something amazing that they cannot explain, be they laymen or scientists or philosophers or whatever, we have a natural inclination to try to figure out what it is. Heck, the fi...

Re: Evolution/ID/Creationism in the Classroom

I understand your point, wrain, but my problem with that statement is that pro-ID people tend to say "look at all the problems and religious aspects of evolution" but give nothing beyond that vague reference to potential issues with evolution. That's one of the problems my professors have ...

Re: Religion gives rise to civilization

Well, I completely agree with the concept that religion was a major factor for development of human civilization. I base that on the idea that religion was a great way for early groups of hunters and gatherers to find common ground and develop a set of rules and expectations for living together. Let...

Re: Evolution/ID/Creationism in the Classroom

Thanks so far to all the input. To clarify the paper, it's mainly focusing on the debate over education on the topic. And, to specify it even more, about the place of ID/creationism in science education. Mostly I'm talking about public schools because private institutions have a much different set o...
