Re: Great article by Dr. Clay Jones on the afterlife
But BW, while I understand your point that this version of heaven is not really theologically supported, what is the purpose of this smear campaign? When the exact same descriptions of heaven have been used by Christian artists, apologists, writers, and leaders of the faith for centuries? As you say...

Re: Deconversion story of notable apologist's daughter
It's an interesting story, though I have to say that I doubt such a thing could happen in a single event. If she was a faithful Christian, I doubt one question could truly "deconvert" her. My gut feeling tells me she was already doubting, whether she admitted it or not, and this moment was...

Re: Question about how protestants view virgins
At least from what I've seen, you will get a mixed bag with how various denominations/churches view virginity. I think most churches will teach that sex outside marriage is a sin, but how much emphasis they place on it will vary greatly, as well as how much virginity is talked about. I can't comment...

Re: Can of worms time.
From a historical perspective, no church or Christian group really had much of an opinion on the age of the Earth/universe until Ussher came along. After his book, lots of Bible printers started printing his chronology in them because it was literally the only chronology that anyone bothered to crea...

Re: Did Exodus happen?
Bear in mind that a group of people who was constantly on the move would not leave any trace of archelogical evidence because there was no permanent settlements that would stand the test of time. Not entirely true, actually. We have lots of archaeological evidence (some much older than biblical tim...

Re: Did Exodus happen?
I'm no expert in archaeology, but I have a handful of anthropologist/archaeologist friends who have told me this: There is literally no record from the Egyptians or the surrounding cultures that there was any mass enslavement of Jews in Egypt, which clashes with a literal biblical account. There is ...

Re: Please, help me out
To be honest, I can't help you much from a theological perspective. That's between you and God, and frankly I've never actually heard marrying your first cousin being called a sin, though I wouldn't be surprised if some more conservative churches would frown upon it. What I can do is give you my opi...

Re: Genesis Creation vs. Darwin's Macroevolution Myth
ALTER2EGO -to- IVELLIOUS: The forum is waiting for you to present examples of the "powerful and overwhelming" scientific evidence for evolution theory. You did not present a shred of scientific evidence to back up your grand claims. You simply told me what you opine. First of all, yes, I ...

Re: Genesis Creation vs. Darwin's Macroevolution Myth
Alter2Ego: Honestly there isn't much for someone who accepts evolution to argue with in this post. You basically just said you think evolution is crap, and left it at that. Frankly, if you want to talk about creationism or something being scientifically superior to anything else, you need to start b...

Re: Geographical Map of Atheism
A 2012 Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life survey reports that U.S. atheism AND agnosticism combined totals for just under 6% of the population. It's also important to note that these statistics are asking only about strict agnosticism/atheism. There are loads of generally non-religious (or in-...

Re: Atheism: Belief or Position?
As far as I see it, atheism is a belief. Atheists explicitly believe that no God/deity/greater supernatural power exists. That is a belief. Now, they have a point if they argue that they lack religious belief, because as far as religion goes there is no "doctrine of atheism" for them to re...

Re: Did Darwin Kill God?
As I've noted before, last semester I took a course called "The Evolution-creationism Controversy" which studied the social, legal, and political impact evolution has had since Darwin's days. The description seems to basically nail it right on head, based on what I learned...The only place...

Re: Abiogenesis, creation, and natural selection
I have a few points/corrections to make. Most people believe that it began with a process called abiogenesis, the development of living organisms from nonliving mater. Don't fool yourself here. In America, I guarantee you this is not true. The vast majority of Americans are theists and very few woul...

Re: New Stephen Hawking big bang article
Well this particular lecture seemed to be less about describing high-level physics and more about the various philosophical ways of looking at the origins of the universe. Obviously he was critical or less-than-impressed with the many creation stories out there and instead felt that M theory was the...
