Gender discrimination in the Church

An interesting point was bought up in another thread and i think it needs to be addressed.
As a christain i believe men and women have different roles to play within the church and in our daily lives also, from the outside this looks to be gender discrimination.
Women are not lesser than a man and vice versa, a man cannot do a womans role in the same way a woman cannot do a mans role.
Unfortunately in this day and age there is no defined roles for men and women in society and the two seem to overlap causing confusion.
Anyone else have some thoughts?

One example would be female priest's and pastor's, do they play the same role as men or are there different roles within the church that they play.

It's a very tricky question.. The answer I see is yes and no.. Yes they may play different roles, but really only how it relates within the Church. Therefore a woman can play a role as an teacher for God, but not in a Church setting (or a physical Church). Why? Because of the role of the God-head. Also it should be noted that not all men can be priest's or pastors either.

And what does it mean to be a priest or pastor? Not a top dictator.. You have to be the top SERVANT. In other words you take the LOW ROAD.

Thanks for the link, it pretty much sums up what i believe on the topic.
We were created different for different puposes, it is not discrimination in the same way that me being unable to be a mother wouldn't be discrimination.
I had this same conversation with one of my friends wifes once as we had a pastor leave because of this issue, she is quite happy with her role as a woman in the church.

I find it a little annoying that people who are secualr see this as discrimination without really understanding why it is this way.

I agree with you, Danny. It is a little annoying. I even had my own family members scoff at the part during my wedding when it says "a woman will submit to her husband" but CONVENIENTLY ignored the immediate following phrase "as a man will submit to his wife, and there will be a mutual submission to each other".

It's like HELLO! SELECTIVE HEARING MUCH?! It's so frustrating.

As a woman, I'm not going to become offended even if someone would refer to me as my husband's "possession". I possess many things, and the things I love the most, I take VERY good care of. In fact, the moment I gave up my previous feminist ways, I felt peaceful because I recognized what's in my inherent nature -- the desire to be protected and cherished. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this.

Jesus chose men and women to follow Him during his short life, and gave them different roles. SHOULD He had wanted female priests to be part of the church, it's not illogical to suggest the first He would have chosen would have been His own MOTHER! But He didn't. He had another enormous role for Her (and all of us subsequently) in His plan. Women were highly regarded and respected by Jesus -- He accepted them when society demanded something different.
Men and women can't be "equal" because, like Danny said, we are completely different. We can do different things, we have different strengths and weaknesses and are meant to compliment each other, not compete with each other, which is often what "equality" leads up to.

I'm a woman. I'm a Catholic woman. And I would have absolutely no problem allowing a good, loving, caring and attentive man be the "head of my household".

I try to stay clear of this subject but reading need to remind readers of how many fallen into sin ministers who are men are out there, how many are not very good pastors as well. I have met many women pastors who all say they would gladly step down as soon as good godly man comes along but to no avail so far. So they plod along, like Debora…

I once had a debate (sort of) with someone whose contention was: Was 1st century Christianity sexist? I mean really, the debate just could not get off the ground. Applying a very modern concept to ancient peoples is a non-starter. It is absurd.
