So the bible was talking about a sphere?

wrain62,

Isaiah 22:18 is talking about something circular in shape. It could be a stone or a bundle. A bundle could be shaped like a cylinder. It is circular in one direction and elongated in another. A stone is not a sphere, unless someone shapes it. A pile is not a sphere, nor is a wall or a encampment of troops.

The Bible does not use a word meaning sphere.

As I pointed out earlier, the Bible points to the earth being a sphere when it talks about the earth being a circle and talks about the curved shape of the horizon.

You have to remember the the Bible isn't all a textbook describing how things are. Job here was describing the glory of God:

"He is the one who sits on the earth’s horizon; its inhabitants are like grasshoppers before him. He is the one who stretches out the sky like a thin curtain, and spreads it out like a pitched tent."

The Lord does not literally sit on the Earth, now does he? We have to remember that the focus of this passage is not to illustrate the fact that the world is round, but to show that God is mighty. "He... sits on the earth's horizon...." merely demonstrates that He is greater than the foundations of the earth's surface, which we are confined to. (One could also argue that, to God in this passage, the shape of the earth's horizon which he views would be circular.)

Thank you kmr,

Yes, Job does describe God's greatness, but this does not take away the fact that he gives descriptions of the earth. Your also right about the Bible not being a text book. Job does the same in 36:26-37:22, but he also gives accurate descriptions of the water cycle.

Your quote is from Isaiah 40:22. A better translation is that God sits above the circle of the earth (see Isaiah 66:1; Psalm 2:4; Matthew 23:22; etc.). So, no God does not sit on the earth. Your right though, the shape of the earth is not the focus, but it cannot be overlooked. I might also mention that the heavens are indeed being stretched. The comparison to a tent works very well, when compared to other Bible passages. This is mentioned in eleven different O.T. passages.

I see the problem, it is the NET Bible tags. This is not a good translation.
