Thanks B.W, I've only read a few books of the OT, so that really helps put it in perspective. I need to read more.

Could I trouble you for some background on the author, John Mark?

Here is a short version of who John Mark was as posted on the Link provided...
The nephew of Barnabas the Apostle who traveled with Paul the Apostle on his first missionary journey and went back when things got tough. Later on Paul mentioned him in his epistle and said to send Mark because he was profitable in the ministry and he had been restored in fellowship with Paul. His mother had a large house probably in the center of town (perhaps even the place where the apostles first gathered) where the saints in Jerusalem would gather for preaching and prayer and that is where they were praying when the Apostle Peter was released from prison by an angle, which would indicate that they were somewhat well to do as well the fact that Barnabas sold land in Cyprus and gave the money to the Apostles would attest to the wealth of their extended family. The split between Paul and Barnabas in Acts 15 was over whether to take John Mark on their next missionary journey. In Christ, Pastor Ed

When Jesus was captured in the gospel of Mark, the text describes a strange person...

Mark 14:51-52
There was a young man following Jesus. He was wearing only a linen cloth. The people also grabbed this man. The cloth he was wearing came off, and he ran away wearing nothing.

This may be Mark himself. This guy is not described in the other gospels.

Have you noticed that the way the gospel writers start their gospels suggests that rather than having a 'miraculous' understanding of scripture, that they learned to read the Old Testament in greater depth as they went along?

For instance, Mark starts with the testimony of John.
Matthew pushes the beginning of the story to Abraham.
Luke pushes it farther back to Adam, while demonstrating a deeper understanding of how John fulfills the prophecy of Elijah.
John expounds on Gen 1:1 using tools of hermeneutics not demonstrated by the other three, but are reproducible from first century sources.

This is the accepted order of the books according to tradition and apparently show a greater understanding and ability to interpret scripture with time.
