Being vain

Post by 1over137 »

When one is just happy and sharing his happiness with friends, and when one starts to be pride, vain?

I consider you guys, my friends (esp. you Rick).
But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.
-- 1 Thessalonians 5:21

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
-- Philippians 1:6

I don't understand what you're saying, Hana. Is this related to the thread about Lucifer, and his vanity?
Are you talking about the different meanings of "pride"?

If one has too much pride in himself, he could be vain.
Or, one can be proud of another person. For example, when I see my son do something, I'm proud of him, as my son.

Is this at all what you're saying?

What I mean is when one is too much proud on himself?
But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.

Can you give me an example, so I can understand your context?

Pride is self-love. Vanity is self-admiration. These are two aspects of the same sin, which is a form of idolatry. This type of idolatry is itself a form of envy, the envy of God's rightful position in your life. So, the vain individual is his own god.

So, you can be proud of your accomplishments because you worked hard to acheive them. You are too proud of your accomplishments when God isn't given the ultimate credit for them because He is the one who formed you as you are. The abilities you have are God-given; you developped them, of course, but God gave them to you.

By analogy, if your father gives you a new car, you can be proud of your car and show it off to your friends, and wash it and put gas in it so that it continues to run. But, ultimately, your father deserves all the credit...get it?

Vanity is when we forget that we never get anywhere by ourselves.
We always owe so much to others in our life.
It is far too easy to be self-absorbed in the world today, a world that keeps tying to remind YOU that its all about YOU.
IMO, the biggest example we have nowadays ( and perhaps always have had) is the sense of "entitlement".
Believing that we should have something ( anything really) simply because we want it and are entitled to it.

We indeed do. There are many people I owe much, but I will mention my father who patiently taught me math and physics in the beginning.
