Sun affects decay of radio isotopes.

Post by Danieltwotwenty »

I don't know if this is old news but I found this article extremely interesting.

If radioactive decay is affected by the sun as the article claims to be a possibility, wouldn't this have huge ramifications of carbon dating etc... ?

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever.Amen.

It could. It would more likely have ramifications for archaeology and human-made artifacts, as opposed to fossils and the like, because sunlight would rarely, if ever, impact things that have been underground for millions of years. Same goes for testing different layers of rock or sediment. But if you wanted to talk about artifacts that may have have long-term exposure outdoors (like tapestries that hung outside or something), then carbon-14 dating might be affected. I don't know the extent to which sunlight and other factors impact decay, though.

Ivellious, if you read the article it goes on to talk about unknown particle similar to neutrinos that can pass through the Earth, so it would affect everything.

so you mean the earth is after all 6000 years old. :esurprised:
It would be a blessing if they missed the cairns and got lost on the way back. Or if
the Thing on the ice got them tonight.

No, it won't there are many other dating methods, employed. Even if we throw out carbon dating, check out this:

What I more meant was like the dating of the shroud of Turin could be wrong etc.....

IF carbon dating was the only method used, maybe.
