God and the devil

This came up in a discussion with a friend today...I haven't been able to explain it well enough so I thought someone here could help:

Since God is all-powerful, why doesn't he just destroy Satan? After all, humans seem to do pretty well being evil enough just on their own.

Maybe it is part of Gods plan not to. Maybe Satan is the reason why we do evil.

If not then you are right I think even the devil might be shaking his head thinking "Come on guys - even I would go that far".
