Tower of Babel , what's that story all about ?

The story of the Tower of Babel really baffles me. What the heck were they possibly building?
Why would [G] not want them to finish some building ??
And it's hard to believe different languages came from 1 event like that. We all see how language changes over time , just try to read old Canterbury English .
And as a result of this event, now I can't understand the true translation of the bible because I don't know the original language? One has to study
Exegesis in order to get the true translation ??
Anyone have a good explanation ??

It's the oldest lie in existence. Isaiah 14:14 "I will ascend above the height of the clouds; I will be like the most High."

It's the same lie that's in the hearts and on the lips of man today. "I will be my own God."
