priests...pastors

Post by Prodigal Son »

catholic priests have this "sworn to secrecy" thing going on. is that the same for pastors (non-denominational)?

If you can trust your pastor as a friend to keep something secret then perhaps yes (otherwise it undermines his honesty). If you can't then you can almost expect him to discuss it with someone else as humans usually do. It also depends on which priest you go to, as remember they're still human too, and human nature seems to find it hard to keep things secret. If you have private life issues you need to discuss then I'd recommend seeing a Christian counsellor, and not a priest or pastor.

Kurieuo.

I'm with Kurieuo. What's more important is to discuss the issue and work it through with a strong Christian - simply confessing is unnecessary because if we've repented then we're already forgiven. Since being forgiven and healing are two different things, I think a counsellor could definately be a better fit, depending on the problem of course.

yes, i know Jesus forgives me. i can't forgive myself. i thought if i told someone face to face i would be sort of owning up to what i've done. sort of facing it and then i could move on. my greatest fear is someone else knowing. i wonder if Jesus wants us to say, "i'll face my greatest fear just to be with you." something like that. i don't even know what i think.

pastors in non-denomination churches are not "sworn" to secrecy per se, but the vast majority of them do perform a lot of counseling and should, according to moral character, keep that information confidential , save where the law prohibits.

Only the EO church and the RCC have confession so only they need to be sworn to secrecy.

The anglican and episcopal churches have a type of confession for absolution and I know there is an expectation of secrecy, I don't know if the priesthood is sworn to it.

PS, I was noticing something a bit different about you lately!
I noticed you had not posted for a week or so (I think) and now that you are back there seemed to be a greater sense of "Christian confidence" about you... and having made your peace with God would explain that.
Way to go!
