Could Jesus Christ have saved us if He had only been human?
Could Jesus Christ have saved us if He had only been human, instead of God-man?
Since Jesus Christ was sinless wouldn't He be an appropriate, acceptable and legal ransom?
Does it violate the meaning of "atonement" for God, who is the offended party, to pay the price of sin to Himself?

No. Jesus Son-of-Joseph would not have been the Christ.Christian2 wrote:Could Jesus Christ have saved us if He had only been human, instead of God-man?
A Jesus Son-of-Joseph would not have been sinless, see Ps 51:5.Christian2 wrote:Since Jesus Christ was sinless wouldn't He be an appropriate, acceptable and legal ransom?

If they had a social gospel in the days of the prodigal son, somebody would have given him a bed and a sandwich and he never would have gone home.

Someone might say because sinners are supposed to pay for their own sins.Furstentum Liechtenstein wrote:No. Jesus Son-of-Joseph would not have been the Christ.Christian2 wrote:Could Jesus Christ have saved us if He had only been human, instead of God-man?

That would be another Gospel: it would not be Christianity.Christian2 wrote:Someone might say because sinners are supposed to pay for their own sins.

How? When never sinning is the way one is supposed to be at all times, how could some one pay for their sins?Christian2 wrote:Someone might say because sinners are supposed to pay for their own sins.

Exactly. If sinners are supposed to pay for their own sins, heaven will be a very lonely place.Furstentum Liechtenstein wrote:That would be another Gospel: it would not be Christianity.Christian2 wrote:Someone might say because sinners are supposed to pay for their own sins.
Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Hi Byblos, I'm dealing with someone who is not a trinitarian, but he believes Jesus would be the perfect sacrifice because He was sinless. I think he might as well go sacrifice a lamb -- why involve a man (Jesus) at all?Byblos wrote:Exactly. I think Jesus being sinless was a byproduct of being God, not the quality that made Him worthy to be the sacrifice for humanity. Ultimately, it was the fact that He was God that made Him worthy of being a savior, though He not being guilty of sin was necessary as well.
I am committed to belief in God, as the most morally demanding, psychologically enriching, intellectually satisfying and imaginatively fruitful hypothesis about the ultimate nature of reality known to me - Keith Ward
Re: Could Jesus Christ have saved us if He had only been hum
I always ask the following question and I have yet to receive an answer that even comes close to rationality. If Jesus were a mere man, why was any of the OT prophets not good enough? Why not Abraham or Isaac or Jacob? Why not Moses? Why the parade of prophets over thousands of years? The answer is simply because they were mere men. God does the saving in more than words, He actually DID the saving.Christian2 wrote:Hi Byblos, I'm dealing with someone who is not a trinitarian, but he believes Jesus would be the perfect sacrifice because He was sinless. Re: Could Jesus Christ have saved us if He had only been hum
The point of Christ paying for our sins is because we simply CAN NOT do it.
Our very act of trying makes the act null and void since it is base don self-interest rather than true repentance.
Here is the paradox of what Christ did:
Humans ( like Adam) spent all their time trying to be like God ( find immortality, do everything, go everywhere, know everything, etc) that they fail to notice that God GAVE UP everything to be one of Us.

Short answer, No.Christian2 wrote:Could Jesus Christ have saved us if He had only been human, instead of God-man?

It would be a blessing if they missed the cairns and got lost on the way back. Or if
the Thing on the ice got them tonight.
I could only turn and stare in horror at the chief surgeon.
Death by starvation is a terrible thing, Goodsir, continued Stanley.
And with that we went below to the flame-flickering Darkness of the lower deck
and to a cold almost the equal of the Dante-esque Ninth Circle Arctic Night
without.
