I was actually more into alternative bands like REM (before they went mainstream) and still love Tears for Fears.
But I did have some punk rock guilty pleasures.
I certainly wasn't listening to Wham.

I'm an 80's new wave/alternative fan myself. Still to this day. I still like a lot of 80's music.

I even find myself appreciating some of the more "strange" bands that I really didn't like back then.

Hey, I was 20 in '77, just before punk. And I actually appreciated a few punk-style bands - but, by FAR, most really stunk. The bands typically knew four chords and they had more attitude than musical talent. Not to mention that the better known bands were marketed brilliantly by middle-aged guys behind the scenes. But I Loved Gang of Four, a bit of The Clash. Totally dig Elvis P and Elvis C. Hate the Sex Pistols. Love the Stones, Beatle's, The Who, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Prog Rock, Deep Purple, Early B Sabbath (at least the music), The Ventures, Les Paul, really dig combo jazz, Miles Davis, Django, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, big band music, orchestral music, film music, classical, Stray Cats, The Police, Genesis, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Jeff Beck, Led Zep, Tom Petty, all kinds of folk music from around the world, Willy Nelson, Patsy Cline, Sinatra, bluegrass, Bela Fleck, rockabilly, Texas Swing, Indian music, '20s and '30s stuff, bit of opera, U2 (MAJOR fan - saw them when they were nobodies with perhaps 200 people) - you name it, if it is QUALITY music, I dig it. I still own perhaps 700 vinyl LPs, a ton of cassette tapes and CDs. But I DESPISE crappy music, sloppily done, no matter the genre - just made to make a buck or that just sounds like a ripoff of other crummy bands.

This is what marketing-driven record labels do: "OK, what is selling at the moment - oh, so Band X is really hot right now. OK, so let's go sign some Band X CLONES, even though they aren't nearly as good as Band X (who also mostly sucks), but they dress the part, have the image - yeah, the kids will eat it up, just like they do with Band X!" And so the suits at these companies think like accountants, not like a good, creative A&R people should. And especially since the later '70s, popular music has been in a terrible spiral of poor quality and image and marketing-driven drivel! Look at what happened to country music (even though I've not been a huge fan, I like some older stuff). Nowadays, they sign a band because of good looks, their ability to wear the right cowboy hats, how thick they can turn on the country twang, put a few fiddles and some pedal steel behind some sappy song about pickup trucks, wild girlfriends, their momma, and various, corny Americana Schtick - really, they just about all sound the same, with the same cornball lyrics. And the same has happened with just about every genre of popular music. Now, that's not to say some fantastic original music isn't still being made, it's just that such artists typically never achieve a wide following or appeal. Because they simply won't get signed - "not marketable enough." But you can see lots of great unknowns on YT videos - which is great.
