In Paul's writings one could find more but here are Jesus' words on brotherly love.

Matthew 5:21-26 NASB
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother[c] will be liable to judgment; whoever insults[d] his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell[e] of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.[f]

7 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

People have a different understanding of what love means it seems.
Some also tend to value Jesus' words in other matters FAR MORE than is commandment to love as HE LOVED Us.
Note that the apostles disagreed with each other, sometimes passionately so and I am sure there were times were there was very little love between some of them.
The difference I guess was that they understood that the message of Christ is NOT given or received the same way by all people ( that is why Paul said for the gentiles he become a gentile and for the Jews, a Jew).
The tolerated and accepted their different ways of preaching and, perhaps because they learned from how badly the pharisees screwed up on their interpretation of scripture, put their faith in Christ.

As with the concept concerning Love - Agape - in particular, I discovered that most believers have a limited understanding of what this word means in its fullest sense. There is understanding of it such as love being unconditional, self sacrificing, but after that, agape becomes obscure in its meaning.

The best way to begin to grasp what agape means is to first look at how the Septuagint translated Hebrew words for love as agape and then blend the meanings. What you find is this, that agape main shades of meaning concern a love that Nurtures, Tends too (cares for), Edifies, Instructs, Chastens, Discipline, Cherishes, and Protects unconditionally often in a self sacrificial way...

So when you read John 3:16, keep that in mind as well as that what is involved for Christians to love one another. In fact all of 1overs scripture quotes concern differing aspects of Agape in action such as Matthew 5:21-26 and Matthew 7:1-5 concerns 'Caring For' and ' chasten/discipline' and 'instruction' as well as 'sacrificing one's selfishness' concerning the deeper aspects of Agape. In fact Genesis 3:17,18,19 also is agape in action of the 'tuff' variety...

As for: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:34-35 ESV

Apply the entire scope of of the meaning to the text and it reads very differently.

the Apostles had conflicts with each other that became heated too - Paul and Barnabas over John Mark, yet latter Paul welcoming them back. Peter, James, and Paul had issues too but they learned from the Holy Spirit from the mistakes they made. We need to do so as well too...
