And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God,[a] and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

What does the underlined mean? Specifically:
1) The sea gave up the dead who were in it
2) Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them

Why are there dead in the sea?
What is the difference between death and Hades used here?

The scene is the Great White Throne judgement. None of those at this judgement are saved.

The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them.

Wherever the dead may be found, their bodies will newly clothe their souls for this event. None will escape this judgement.

Why are there dead in the sea?

Because some bodies were lost at sea. Again, the sense of this passage is Wherever the dead are, they will be brought forth and judged.

What is the difference between death and Hades used here?

''Death'' is the resting place of the body, ''Hades'' is the resting place of unsaved souls.

The bible seems to indicate that hell is in the earth and in the sea also.You might want to read the book of Jonah also and blend what Jonah says about hell with this in Revelation,there are also different compartments in hell also,also this is why demon spirits rise up out of the sea also during the tribulation too. There appears to be openings or the gates of hell that are at the bottom of the sea.Jonah mentions bars as Jonah went to hell but was brought back to life by God which is why Jesus referred to Jonah being in the fish for 3 days and was brought back.Some people have speculated that there are numerous mysterious places around the earth in different seas like the Bermuda triangle and that these places could be openings or gates of hell..

The Bible is not clear about whether Jonah died in the fish or not. Jesus recalling Jonah as an analogy of what He was about to go through does not require it either.

Jonah 2:5-6.These verses indicate he drowned and went to hell inside the earth. Also compare with Job 1:7
