What do people think of drinking as far as being Christian goes?

Now this one is close to my heart

Personally, I drink way too much (although the last few weeks have gone really, really well)

I don`t think there is any problem with it as long as it is in moderation, the problems start when it becomes a crutch or habit, then it`s very difficult to control. How much is too much? depends on a lot of things but I think if alcohol plays an important part in your life then that may be a warning sign.

It took me a long time and a lot of tears and pain before I even considered that I may have a drinking problem, even now, when I type that I find myself thinking it`s not really a problem, I`m handling it but drink still has some hold over me. i`m working through it, praying hard and offering it all up to God. So far it`s working and I have come a long way.

If you can enjoy the odd glass of wine, or perhaps a nice cold beer on a hot day without going down the road of excess then I don`t think drinking is an issue and can be great fun but sometimes it goes beyond that and that`s when I think it starts becoming "wrong"

So, I shall raise a glass of orange juice or iced tea instead

I always wondered bout bartenders.. I mean can you be a "Christian" bartender? Like if someone comes in who you know is an alcoholic.. you'd have to serve them (assuming they weren't way past their limit and it is 'ok' to say no more)

That would be a hard call to make, whether to serve someone you knew was an alcoholic. Part of me thinks, sure, why not? Surely it`s their decision and who knows the reasons for their dependence? I once met a homeless guy, alcoholic and a drug addict. He had served in the Falklands War and just couldn`t adjust to being back in the civillian world. Alcohol and drugs were his only release. What right do I have to deny him those things?

Yes but isn't it a form of enabling them causing them to stumble. I totally agree that it's their decision though but when someone is offering it without hesitation it's alot easier to take

Agreed.

Trouble is it`s not illegal to be an alcoholic and how do you judge someone to be one? I have worked in bars and it`s hard to judge sometimes. Where do you draw the line? Refuse to serve a sober alcoholic but serve the drunk and rowdy stag party?

That said, many evils are caused due to alcohol abuse.
It can and does sneak up on people and cause destruction.

A person should be wise to themselves.
The ones who need to be normally aren't.

Christians ought not judge someone simply because they enjoy a drink.
I'll refuse to share a drink with such people!
