Telling the truth

Corrie Ten Boom is my hero...
But she told a lie

For those that dont't know her - she and her family hid jews during WW2.
All of them ended up in a concentration camp.

While they hid the jews in their house, they lied about it to the authorities.

Now, the bible says God hates lying.

Was she sinning?

And what about Rahab lying about the spies?

Is it ok to hide the truth, tell partial truths or even tell flat out lies?

Tough one this.

Lying is wrong but if it saves lives, surely that's a good thing?
I guess the fact remains that lying is a sin, no matter what but each case needs to be judged accordingly. If I had to lie to save people I would and feel I could justify it, or at least live with it.

No - not at all.

The concept of lying God hates refers to malicious slander in what is called nowadays as character assassination built upon falsehood to deliberately destroy a person. Another form of Lying on this level is how a con-man swindles another. Another form is lying to blame another for your error to gain an advantage. The idea behind the types of lying god hates is found in the context of Proverbs 6:16,17,18,19 is to bring another person down based on the undertones of Proverbs 6:16-19 of promoting destruction, ruin, death, and theft (note the context as it describes the lying God hates)

Corrie Ten Boom and others did not lie in that sense at all. They were tactful with truth and that truth is the safety and preservation of life against great evil. Great evil will always pit the bible against itself and set the people of God up, especially on the subject of lying, by telling one they can't lie in the manner as Corrie Ten Boom did to protect the innocent from evil, so as to gain an advantage well seen through guilt trips.

We should always walk in truth using God's gift of wisdom concerning truth.
