If they are crying out for their mother while dying to help or save them, then it's quite possible they are still crying out to a 'god' that they are trusting in, above anything else. A mother can give temporary comfort at the point of death but really, thats it.

As far as which god- at this point we are simply trying to establish a god, or creator- in which look around! Do you think I should be able to light a firework and create a complex universe of finely tuned, constructed, organized atoms? Or is our mothers responsible as well?
