I can't pretend to understand the logic of your mum or the culture but my Dad is much same in that he has never told me he loves me. His actions have proven one way or the other I guess.
He is Finnish and I don't think he was brought up to be open to express himself. I have often joked he has the emotional maturity of a three year old.

But I disagree words are cheap.
In regards to heartfelt expression. I have chosen to not live in the emotional barrenness my dad did.
When you know better you do better, and well I know better.
I have told my kids I love them everyday of their lives, with an openness that terrified me at first. That's not to say I didn't appreciate everything my dad did for me, he worked his ass off... Gave me the best education but all we want is to be loved. At the very core.
There are many ways to express that, but I like the linguistic approach....
I love you,
Sometimes is so hard not because we don't feel it, but because we are programmed to not express it.
I think it's best to just say what we mean and mean what we say...
but I understand very well that sometimes those that have the most love have the biggest difficulty putting it into words.

A Norwegian friend said that Scandanavians would not show feelings, even if they had any.

To quote 'Chasing Cars' by Snow Patrol..

Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

And that is true.

BUT
It is also true that we do not say those three words enough
And use actions instead.

We need both.

God didn't give us both as options to choose from according to our own
personal preference.

There is a time for everything.

Use to hang at my friends place, help with dishes and such, so I'd somewhat agree with what audie's mum's said about love. It's partly how I expressed my love to her but in saying that if I was at my parents...I would also do dishes, but out of obligation not really love.

Audie: Mom never once said the words "I love you" to me, and I dont think she ever will.
I don't say it to her. Words are cheap, and its just not our culture to say it.
Audie, what would be your reaction if your mom DID say it, how would you respond?

I would be surprised, wonder a bit. But Im pretty much American now, so it
seems natural to say it.

No you are not. If you were, you'd probably know how to spell your name. ;)

FYI, it's Leia.

The importance of words:
If you can't say what you mean, you'll never mean what you say.

Taken from.wikipedia...
Garfunkel once summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."
