To GnS Board Members & Mods

Post by Nessa »

Since joining here, I have felt stereotyped by certain individuals.

And I have also stereotyped others which I deeply regret :(

On a board like this tho, it can be hard to really get a true grasp on who someone is and what they believe. Miscommunication can be so easy as well as taking or giving offense. And before we know it we can find ourselves put in a box or putting someone else in a box.

I guess what Im trying to say is don't be so quick to make assumptions about people.
What they do or don't believe. What their character is like. Always stay open to the possibility you could be wrong about someone.

“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” - Anas Nin

That includes seeing how people are. We can often view people through our own experiences with others, good or bad.

Everyone deserves to be seen as they truly are not who they are truly not.

What, you liked then removed your like!?
I'm not quite sure what to make of that. Does the mean my comment was liked?
Or, it's like, oops accidentally liked and now I'm removing it because I actually hate your comment. :crying:

Nessa,

I have you pegged as a half-witted, ditzy blonde. Where am I wrong with that stereotype of you?

Do you know why we stereotype?
Because it tends to be accurate when dealing with the MASS.
It is however, not very accurate when dealing with the individual.

In short, we generalize the group because, as a whole, a group does indeed tend to display the features that are stereotypical.

My advice: Don't impulsively decide the truth of something or something that has been said mostly based upon how it makes you feel. A lot of us have one particular issue or chip on our shoulders from past perceived slights or hurts, and when anyone swerves anywhere close to it with a comment or idea, we go bezerk over it. Everyone that says something that offends our sensitivities is A) out to get us or B) is totally devoid of truth. I've got a pretty thick skin, but there are somethings that will bring an emotional reaction far quicker than other things. The Christians here, for the most part, don't typically try to deliberately tick people off or hurt their feelings - although they sometimes do without malice. So, let's take a few deep breaths and perhaps ask a followup question as opposed to simply reacting out of anger or hurt.
