Seventy weeks Daniel 9
The explanation of the seventy weeks in Daniel 9:24, were given to Daniel to clarify the vision of chapter 8 with the longest time frame in any prophecy. A correct understanding of all the time references in visions etc is apparent if we accept that one day in vision time is one literal year. A year is also called a "time." This is a Bible principle which is another topic, but try it to see if it works.
Without this key, the prophecy has no relation with surrounding scripture.
Verse 24 says that 70 weeks are given them to be reconciled to God.
There are 69 weeks, verse 25, from the commandment to restore Jerusalem "going forth,"until the Messiah (Christ).
There were three commandments by the Persian empire, Ezra 1:1-4, 6:1-12, and chapter 7. 536, 519 and 457 BC . These were written by Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes respectively.
The only written command which effectively reached it target was the third - 457 BC, the first two never went "forth."
The walls were built in troubled times, verse 26, and after 62 weeks the Messiah would be "cut off."
Christ would "confirm the covenant" for one week, and in the middle of the week cause the sacrificial system to end. Verse 27.
Converting vision time into real time, we have 49 years of building the wall, 434 years until Christ began His ministry, 27 AD,
He confirms the covenant, or establishes the 490 years of grace over 7 years.
In the middle of that 7 years He is cut off, 31 AD, and in 34 AD Paul was chosen to take the gospel to the Gentiles, just after the stoning of Steven, which ended the grace or covenant of 490 years for Israel.
The whole explanation to Daniel is to put a starting point for the 2300 years, when God promised that a judgement of the little horn would begin, that is, an exposure of the powers that Satan has set up to deceive the world. Namely the religious and political powers represented in the whole book.
Before this judgement would begin, at "the time of the end" of the 2300 years, the Papal rule of "a time times and half a time," or three and a half years, or 1260 days/years, from 538 AD to 1798 AD, would also end. Daniel 7:25, 12:7.
Now study Daniel 7, 8 and 9 again in the unadulterated KJV and see if it makes sense.
All of the visions in Daniel are built on the first one of the metal image, always use the previous chapters as a foundation for interpreting the next.

Re: Seventy weeks Daniel 9
Here is what I wrote on Daniel 9. I wrote this specifically for outreach of the Jews, so there will be lots of explanatory side-topics.
Daniel had read the prophecies of Jeremiah and realized that the time of exile was coming near the end. He fasted and prayed on behalf on him and his people.
Now while I was speaking and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God in behalf of the holy mountain of my God, while I was still speaking in prayer, then the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision previously, came to me in my extreme weariness about the time of the evening offering. He gave me instruction and talked with me and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you insight with understanding. At the beginning of your supplications the command was issued, and I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed; so give heed to the message and gain understanding of the vision.
“Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place. So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.” (Daniel 9:20-27)
So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty two weeks (69 weeks):
The word for weeks in the Hebrew is shabuwa` which refers to sets of sevens. Throughout the Old Testament the word is used in reference to a set of seven days, weeks, and years. An alternative translation to seventy weeks could be seventy sevens. King Artaxerxes of Persia gives Nehemiah, his cupbearer, the decree allowing Nehemiah to return to rebuild the walls and the Temple of Jerusalem in the year 444 B.C. (Nehemiah 2:1-8). The Messiah, Jesus, was cut off and was reduced to nothing in the year 33 A.D. (Isaiah 53) This is a gap of 476 years (1 .B.C. to 1 A.D. is 1 year). However when accounting for the difference between the length of an ancient Persian calendar and the prophetic Hebrew calendar (360 days) with our modern-day calendar (365.25 days), 476 years becomes 483 ancient Persian/Hebrew prophetic years. 483 is 69 sets of 7 (69*7).

Jesus finished the transgression of the people and made an atonement for iniquity when he died on the cross. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. (Isaiah 53:5-6)

We all have inquity and sins that must be atoned for. The Lord has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one. Psalm 14:2-3
When Noah built an altar and burnt animals as an atone sacrifice: And the LORD smelled a sweete savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. Genesis 8:21
For the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth: When Adam and Eve sinned against God death and suffering, became a part of human life. Adam and Eve were the perfect humans until sinn entered. Just like physical defects are present in the gene pool of humanity, our souls are born with spiritual defects. This is what Augustine of Hippo would coin as "original sin."
The tree of Good and Evil: http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/tree.html
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline will remove it far from him. (Proverbs 22:15)
Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, I have sinned. And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak and blameless when You judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Psalm 51:1-5 (start of King David's prayer of repentance)
Sin nature: http://www.gotquestions.org/born-in-sin.html
People have a sin nature. We see the evidence all over us in war, corruption, murder, stealing, and mistreatment of people. This is why many of the revolutions did not improve the situation and caused an increase in violence. The new guy in charge gets corrupted and becomes just like the bad guy they replaced (Chinese Communist Revolution, Russian Revolution, French Revolution, etc.) Good person test: http://www.goodpersontest.com/ Are human beings in general good?: http://www.godandscience.org/apologetic ... egood.html
God is a holy God. For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; No evil dwells with You. (Psalm 5:4) https://bible.org/seriespage/5-holiness-god
God is a just God. He cannot tolerate evil. The wages of sin is death. The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father's iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son's iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself. (Ezekiel 18:20) All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. (Isaiah 53:6)
God is Love. The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. (Exodus 34:6-7)
The LORD said to me, "Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes." (Hosea 3:1, God told the prophet Hosea to marry an adulterous woman, Gomer, to illustrate his love for the spiritual adulteress, the Israelites)
God does not take pleasure in the damnation of the wicked. As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. (Ezekiel 33:11)
God sent his only begotten Son to make atonement for the sins of the whole world. But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. Jesus when he came on the earth was both God and man. The atoning sacrifice for the world, had to be a man because sin had entered the world through Adam and Eve. "For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive." (1 Corinthians 15:21-22).* The Old Testament sacrifices were a temporary covering for sins not a permanent atonement. He had to be a perfect man to be suitable atonement. http://www.gotquestions.org/abolish-fulfill-law.html If Jesus was not God, his sacrifice would not have finished the trangressions and make an end to sin. If he was only a human his sacrifice would cover the sins of one person, because Jesus is God his sacrifice covers the sins of the world.
Yet I have been the LORD your God Since the land of Egypt; And you were not to know any god except Me, For there is no savior besides Me. Hosea 13:4
I, even I, am the LORD; and besides me there is no savior. Isaiah 43:11
"Declare and set forth your case; Indeed, let them consult together. Who has announced this from of old? Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, A righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me. Isaiah 45:21

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. Re: Seventy weeks Daniel 9
This is the second part of my article, written for Jewish outreach.
The Messiah is the only true permanent atonement for sins.
"Then Moses returned to the Lord, and said, “Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made a god of gold for themselves. But now, if You will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out from Your book which You have written!” The Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. But go now, lead the people where I told you. Behold, My angel shall go before you; nevertheless in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.” Then the Lord smote the people, because of what they did with the calf which Aaron had made. Exodus 32:31-35
When Moses was talking to God and trying to bargain with God regarding the Israelites and their sins of worshipping the Golden Calf, he mentioned the Book that God had written. He offered to have his name removed from that book so that the Israelites could avoid judgement from God. The Heavenly Book he was referring to was the Book of Life. http://www.jewsforjesus.org/publication ... bookoflife The Book of Life was also known by David.
For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous. Psalm 69:26-28
The Book of Life is also binding in the New Covenant.
Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life. Phillipians 4:3
The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. Revelation 3:5
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. Revelation 20:12
http://www.gotquestions.org/Lambs-book-of-life.html
God told Moses: Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.
God is the giver and creator of life, in fact he is Life. When we do not allow in his ways, death is a natural result. Not only in a physical sense but in a spiritual sense.
All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. (Isaiah 53:6)
When we turn to our own way, we choose the path of death. It is only through the Messiah's atonement so can be unblotted out of the Book of Life.
*Not to get on a side-note but children who die before they can comprehend the concept of right and wrong are declared innocent because they have not sinned and have not been blotted out of the Book of Life. http://www.godandscience.org/doctrine/b ... o_die.html*
The Messiah is the only way of salvation. The Messiah is the only way of salvation. The Old Testament saints received salvation through faith in the future sacrifice (Hebrews 11). Abraham, Daniel, etc. had faith in the future promises of God and were credited as righteous. http://www.gotquestions.org/Old-Testame ... ation.html We receive salvation through faith in the past sacrifice. A good analogy would be like using a credit card to buy something based on a future promise to pay (OT) while we have the pre-paid gift card based on a payment already made.
The Lord says:
These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught. Isaiah 29:13
"For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise." Psalm 51:16-17
This is why good works cannot save someone. God does not merely look at actions but also looks at the heart. Our sinful actions are a problem but it is a problem that are symptoms of a sinful heart.
"For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:" Matthew 15:19
"Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator. A mediator, however, implies more than one party; but God is one." Galatians 3:19-20
The moral laws that God spoke unto Moses, was given so that Jews and Gentiles would see their own trangressions and see their need for salvation. When God told the prophet Jeremiah that the New Covenant would be the Law written in our hearts, he was talking about the regeneration of the heart through the Holy Spirit that happens when we put our faith in the Messiah.
"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God." 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Without the washing of the blood of Jesus and the sanctification of the Spirit of God, you are unrighteous and cannot inherit the kingdom of God.
*Justification is an instant moment where we are declared righteous and holy before God from a standpoint of the Law. It happens at the moment of salvation. However sanctification is a process where the Holy Spirit works within so that we become righteous and holy from the standpoint of everyday life. https://carm.org/justification-and-sanctification *
God fulfilled his promise to Jeremiah, when after the ascension of Jesus unto Heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?s ... rsion=NKJV
At the Festival of Shavuot on A.D. 33, the Holy Spirit descended on the first church gathering. As God said to the prophet Joel: "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:" (Joel 2:28) This was a partial fulfillment (I will get into that in another posting). https://bible.org/article/pentecostal-e ... udy-acts-2
Right now we live in the year of the Lord's favor and before the day of his vengeance. http://discussions.godandscience.org/vi ... 22&t=39899 http://discussions.godandscience.org/vi ... 22&t=39908
The first time the Messiah came, he was to atone. When he returns, he is going to judge. http://www.jewsforjesus.org/publication ... urningking
First there will be an attempt by Satan to stop God's plan.
After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him. Daniel 9:26-27
"The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary": At 70 A.D. the Roman legions of Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple there. This indicates the Anointed One (Messiah) would come before the temple destruction. "And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation": The Romans would later build a temple dedicated to Jupiter on the Temple ruins.
“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.” Daniel 12:1-4
"At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people will arise":
"Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. Revelation 12: 7-9
The time of distress refers to the Great Tribulation that will happen as a result of the rise of the false Messiah (called the Anti-Christ in the book of Revelation). The false Messiah will be given power by Satan to rule the world. http://www.biblestudytools.com/commenta ... ation.html
But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered.: With the risk of opening a can of worms by getting into the whole pre-trib/post-trib debate, some Bible scholars believe that this verse is saying that people whose names are written in the Book of Life (believers in the Messiah) will delivered before the Great Tribulation and not experience it at all (pre-trib rapture), other scholars believe that yes the saints will experience the Great Tribulation but they delivered in the midst of it (post-trib rapture). There will be also people who resist the False Messiah during the Great Tribulation who will be beheaded (pre-trib scholars believe that there will be several people who come into a saving knowledge of the Messiah after the Rapture but will die for their faith during the Great Tribulation).
The Anti-Christ will do battle against the nation of Israel (Ezekiel 38-39),
They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.
“Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”
Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon. Revelation 16:14-16
When the Messiah delivers them from the battle, the Israelites will realize that Jesus is the Messiah.
I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written:
“The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.” Romans 11:25-27
Zechariah 12 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?s ... chariah+12
Now when Paul said that all Israel would be saved, he was talking about the Jews who survive the Great Tribulation and the battle against the Anti-Christ. If you read Ezekiel 38-39, you realize that many people will die in the meantime.
" And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land." Ezekiel 39:12 Therefore we should not use the phrase "all Israel will be saved" as an excuse to deprive them of the knowledge of the Messiah.
Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. (Daniel 12:2): After the final defeat of Satan, all the dead will be resurrected and with those who survived will be brought before God in judgement.
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. (Revelation 20:10-12)
Anyone who rejected the Messiah will be brought to shame and everlasting contempt.
The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:13-15
*Hades is the word the translators of the Septuagint used as the closest Greek word to the Hebrew word Sheol. So that is the term that the writers of the New Testament used. It does not refer to the Hades of Greek mythology but to Sheol. http://www.gotquestions.org/sheol-hades-hell.html*
I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. Psalm 2:7-12
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. Daniel 7:13-14. The Ancient of Days is God the Father. The one like a son of man is the Messiah. The Messiah will approach the Father and be given authority over the whole earth and they will worship Him.
Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. Daniel 12:3
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:1-4
The Messiah is returning. Will you be with Him in victory or will you be cast away with the unrighteous? This is the year of the Lord's favor but soon it will be the day of God's vengeance.

Re: Seventy weeks Daniel 9
Some people have taken the 70 weeks or 70 X 7 days, given to the Jews, as ending somewhere around the death of Christ, but with the last week being separate and somehow finding itself in the last days - 2000 years later.
I can't see how this is calculated, however if you have a short answer or a few texts, that would be enough to go on.

This lays it out. Although Christ likely was likely crucified on April 3rd,33 AD.

Re: Seventy weeks Daniel 9
Thanks for that, I understand the application of the 70 weeks, but not how the last week is stretched out to 2000 years.SoCalExile wrote:This lays it out. Although Christ likely was likely crucified on April 3rd,33 AD.
Particularly since the Messiah would be cut off in the middle of that 70th week. That would place the crucifixion in about 1000 AD, which is interesting because the Papacy ruled then and its symbol over all is Christ on the cross.
But the angel does not give Daniel or the book a reason or text to subscribe the 70th week any different than the rest.
If the 70 weeks is correctly calculated to be 490 years, beginning in the time of Persia and ending just after the crucifixion, how does the 2300 time period in Daniel 8:14 fit in?

Re: Seventy weeks Daniel 9
The last week happens after the church is gone, Israel rebuilds the temple, and God once again focuses on them, which is called The Time of Jacob's Trouble. Christians call it the Tribulation.
ETA: Had to edit my comment on Daniel 8 and the 2300 days and nights. in fact, the answer is in verse 25: "The vision of the evenings and mornings that was told to you is correct. But you should seal up the vision, for it refers to a time many days from now." So it doesn't tell us.

Overall, this guy does a great job in explaining the general evangelical view of the end times. He is also a good study in how to do a Bible-centered sermon. I think he gets into Daniel 8 here.

"general evangelical view"?
Is there really such a thing?

Re: Seventy weeks Daniel 9
Im in agreement with your 457 BC start-point of the 70 weeks, and also your view that the last 'week' should not be sent 2000 years in the future.Starhunter wrote: ...

Re: Seventy weeks Daniel 9
Why would the prophecy of “seventy weeks" indicate anything but 70 sequential weeks? Why would this biblical time period start, then stop at what the experts call a 'gap,' and then start up again some 2000 years later? If that's the case then the week following the 69th week really isn't the 70th week since there's a 2000 year gap!
The passage in verse 25 and 26 speak about the Messiah. So grammatically speaking it makes no sense that verse 27 would suddenly completely change into speaking about the anti-Christ. The Messiah being “cut off" is referring to Christ’s death.

Re: Seventy weeks Daniel 9
I keep seeing this SDA false teaching about Jesus being the one who confirmed the covenant of Daniel 9:27 and ended sacrifices, and even applied as the one who destroyed Jerusalem and the 2nd temple! That is a false teaching through and through, a doctrine of men, and not what the Daniel 9 prophecy is teaching at all.
That teaching does not want us to link the events of the "vile person" in Daniel 11, which is a further detail of the events of Daniel 9:27, and is about the actual one that will make the 7 year covenant of Daniel 9:27 and end sacrifices and place the abomination that makes desolate which our Lord Jesus Himself forewarned us about in Matthew 24 for the end of this world.
There are 3 periods of 70 weeks given in the Daniel 9 prophecy:
1. 7 weeks (49 years) - from the command to restore and build Jerusalem - (to the dedication) - Nehemiah 2 - the 20th year of Artaxerxes - 454 B.C. (per Ussher's dating).
2. 62 weeks (434 years) - from the dedication to the coming of Messiah - 29 A.D. ( 49 + 434 = 483 years from command to restore in 454 B.C.). 29 A.D. is the time of the cross, and completed 69 weeks of the prophecy. Messiah was cut off at this point.
3. 1 week - the final 70th week - still unfulfilled. This week in no way can be added into the previous period of 69 weeks that ended in 29 A.D. It doesn't take much brain power to realize that's exactly what those who assign Jesus as making the Dan.9:27 covenant are doing, and it is wrong to try and do that.
Our Lord Jesus did not make any 7 year covenant at His 1st coming and Ministry. The only Covenant He offered was the New Covenant of His Blood, an Everlasting Covenant. Any true Christian ought to immediately realize that from God's Holy Writ in the Four Gospels and New Testament Epistles.
Starting at Daniel 11:21, the Scripture begins speaking of a "vile person" that makes a "league" with a small group in Jerusalem. That is the one in Dan.9:27 that makes a 7 year covenant and breaks it in the middle. The "vile person" will be against the "holy covenant" per Dan.11:28-30. This reveals the 7 year covenant (or "league" of Dan.11:23) is about the re-establishing of the old covenant ("holy covenant") involving sacrifices and a temple.
Then Dan.11:30 reveals the army of that "vile person" ending sacrifices and placing an abomination idol in the temple, thus causing spiritual desolation of the temple. In 170-165 B.C., Antiochus Epiphanes took Jerusalem, then ended the sacrifices, then went into the temple and sacrificed swine on the altar, and then setup an idol on the altar to Zeus. That serves as the pattern for this Dan.11 event by the "vile person", which is still future, simply because about 200 years later, our Lord Jesus quoted from this event in Daniel in Matthew 24 about the end of this world, warning us about the "abomination of desolation" standing in the temple Jerusalem where it ought not.
It is this future event in Jerusalem of a false Messiah showing up there, and the deceived saying it is Christ, and the rebuilding of a 3rd temple and startup of sacrifices and old covenant worship again that is the subject of the coming Antichrist our Lord Jesus and His Apostles warned us about for the end of this world just prior to His return. The abomination that will be placed in the future new temple built by the orthodox Jews in today's Jerusalem is what the "image of the beast" is about in Revelation 13.

Ah symbolism...

Re: Seventy weeks Daniel 9
You must be talking about previous chapters in the Book of Daniel, like the beast statue and horns, etc., because with the 70 weeks prophecy it is all literal, even giving specific times.PaulSacramento wrote: ↑Wed Sep 19, 2018 7:18 am Ah symbolism...

What are the 69 weeks referring to - what are the possibilities? IS it clear?
Fascinating article:

From the author, Dr. Leslie McFall's bio:
Lecturer in Hebrew and Old Testament before becoming a full-time researcher in Biblical Studies. Former Research Fellow at Tyndale House Library (Cambridge, England)
MAIN INTERESTS: Old and New Testament chronology (incl. LXX); chronology of Jesus’ ministry; new approach to a Harmony of the four Gospels; the Majority (Byzantine) Text as the Autograph Text of the New Testament; divorce; headship; and solving apparent contradictions in the Bible where they are a stumbling block to faith in the trustworthiness of Scripture.
The bottom line of all my research and teaching is to restore faith in the WORD OF GOD as a means to restoring faith in the GOD OF THE WORD
