Is MMA a sin? Should I go to UFC 216 in Las Vegas this weekend?

Post by Blessed »

I am a huge fan of UFC/MMA and martial arts. I watch every single event. I know many of the fighters by name, ablities, injury, personal lives, and I bet on these events. I've basically been limited or robbed at two online casinos after being referred to management for winning to much.

My brother is a 3rd degree blackbelt in traditional Shotokan Karate. I started taking karate when I was a small child. My parents wanted me to be able to stand up for myself against bullies at school after I was taken out of private Christian school after grades Pre-K though 5 and put into the atrocious public school system. My parents understood bullying can have a long term effect on a childs psyche. Studies have been done which seem to back this up.

I realize MMA fighting is up for debate amoungst Christains.... I've even seen T-shirts that say I "Jesus never tapped". Nonetheless I understand if people feel it's wrong or sinful or hyporcritical.

Now that's out of the way. I spent the weekend running from machine gun fire and hiding in a locked housekeeping closet upstairs in the hotel in the dark for 4-5 hours, an unarmed fish, begging the police to come save me, waiting to be massacered (or shot by a paraniod cop). It was the most terrifying horrible feeling of my life. I've never prayed so hard.

I believe this was meant to happen to me because I was exacatly at the wrong place at the wrong time when the shooting started lost money playing Black Jack and felt an "urge" to leave the Palms casino and go to Mandalay Bay-Luxor location - right at the exact specific time before the shooting started.

There is another large event this weekend in Las Vegas at the T-mobile arena called UFC 216. 50k people will be packed in the T-Mobile arena. Ticket prices have dropped to absurd low levels. I can get a $50 ticket or a $300 ticket for front row seats which usually cost between $3,000 - $10,000 a peice.

I am torn between going and not going. I really want to go. I feel if I don't, I feel I'm letting fear win. But if I do, I'm kind of being a fool for, obvious reasons. I suppose when God want's us to go, he will take us.

Should I beleive in this or run out of fear? What do you think is the best thing to do. Should I go? I am just wondering. Sorry I have a bunch of dumb questions here. I guess I'm just talking. :|

Profiting off the pain of others would be a sin.

Even if the one in pain is also profiting, willfully?

I'd just chalk this issue up to a conscience issue. It's between a believer and his conscience.

Um, it's a sport, with two willing participants.

They can tap out/end the fight whenever they like, it's not like they are forced to fight. They get compensated for their efforts as well.

I can see both sides, but I don't think it's a sin.

Where do you draw the line, rugby and American football are pretty rough as well, is that a sin?

The difference with sports like MMA and boxing - you win by attacking the body - and especially the head - which is really dangerous, certainly over the long term. So, you are making money off of a sport that is built around intentional bodily harm. Course, you might make that case for martial arts. My son is a black belt, my wife a brown belt.

For sure, but we were asked for an opinion and you know that mine is well informed in this case.

You don't see the difference between professional fighting and sports in which contact is part of the game BOT not the end goal of it?

I guess we need to define sin, right?
Just because consenting adults agree to participate, doesn't make it NOT a sin.

Just because you've had one too many punches to the head, that doesn't mean you know what you're talking about.
