Animals experience the same emotions that people do. Whether we know enough about them to read those emotions, whether they understand them as we do, and whether these emotions are experienced as profoundly by them as by us is the question.
People are so quick to desire to feel superior. "I'm better than the apes! They don't feel the same things I do. They don't think the same things. They aren't as smart as we are!" Did you guys know that some apes have human intelligences, and that dolphins far surpass even the intelligence of apes? That means, that cute little smiling dolphins or ugly butt-scratching apes might be as smart as some of us!
God set us apart for only reasons he knows. That is enough to make us special. Don't have such low self-esteem!
