It's Official: Pope Changes Lord's Prayer Line

Post by Philip »

The Pope did not like the wording of a line in Matthew's Gospel.

He changed the phrase "lead us not into temptation" to "do not let us fall into temptation," as mentioned in the gospel of Matthew 6:13, because he thinks the original translation implies that God induces temptation. The change, officials said, is closer to the original intent of the prayer.

I agree that God does not tempt or lead anyone to temptation (see James 1:13: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?s ... ersion=ESV). But I think this is as much more about the pope asserting (and reminding Catholics of) his supposed "right" to add to - or even change - what Scripture says. The CC has added much to Scripture over the centuries, which Scripture strongly warns not to (https://bible.knowing-jesus.com/topics/ ... -The-Bible).

Personally,

I don't see much difference between the two interpretations.

Indeed - I wouldn't be surprised if a few Bible translations put it as something more like 'do not let us fall'. I just looked up the New Living Translation and it says 'don't let us yield to temptation'.
