Two-time heavyweight champion GEORGE FOREMAN'S death yesterday, at age 76, finds millions of people around the world mourning his death - many of whom know very little about his career as a boxer. They know him as the sweet, lovable entrepreneur that sold vast millions of his famous grill. And many also know him as a serious evangelist and warrior for Christ! "Big George" stood 6'3 and struck fear into the boxers who stepped into the ring with him. He was in the famous "Rumble in the Jungle" match in Zaire, in which Muhammad Ali utilized his famous "rope-a-dope strategy to tire Foreman and then knock him out.
In 1977, Foreman faced the formidable Jimmy Young, losing in a decision. But it is what happened in the dressing room afterward that truly stunned and forever changed him into an on-fire evangelist for Christ! On the table after the match, George had a near-death experience where he began fighting for his life - and he briefly died and said he encountered a "deep, dark place" with a "smell of death, I haven't forgotten it yet." He said he knew absolutely that he was seeing Hell - as he recalls seeing and endless sea of people caught up in "some type of trap." But when he left that dressing room, he says "I was screaming the name of Jesus." People thought he had lost his mind, but he said that was the moment that he was transformed and "given a second chance." And afterward, Foreman has traveled the world as a witness for Christ. And along the way, he also found time to win the heavyweight championship again, after not boxing for 10 years - and, at age 48, became the oldest boxing heavyweight champion in history!
Like the Apostle Paul's shocking experience and transformation through his encountering Jesus on the road to Damascus, sometimes, God simply steps in instantly changes a person to know who Jesus truly is - and that is exactly what happened to George Foreman!
