Psychic abilities...

I'm just curious, am I the only one who believes they exist?

I think they exist, mainly from having seen my grandfather being a rather reluctant vehicle for it. He saw quite a few visions of people, and it later transpired they had died at the exact time he saw them. He was adeeply religious Christian and prayed for the gift to be removed from him. He almost never spoke about it, it was a terrible burden for him. Creeps me out.

There is just so many scams around this these days that it is impossible to know who's truly gifted or just yanking our chain.

I believe in psychic abilities but only in that they are random and you can't hone your skills or anything of that sort.

I'll put together my own concept of the basics of psychic ability when I have the time. At any rate, there are Biblical reasons to believe they exist as well. Jesus's arrest is a perfect example.

I would not use Jesus as an example as his powers came from the Holy Spirit and you won't really be able to or want to prove otherwise.

Actually, yes I can. His power came from Himself(God). You will notice that God never breaks the laws of His own universe. I suspect that because of that, He likely implemented an energy system that allows Him to do as He wishes without breaking(and quite likely unbalancing) the universe in the process. In fact, I'm going to go write my whole theory out and post it.

my family on my mom's side has dreams that come true (or, rather, predict the future). my grandmother woke up screaming when my mom was younger, saying that her brother had died. after not being able to calm her down my grandfather left for her brother's house to bring him back and prove to my grandmother that he was alive. on the way there he found her brother dead (he'd fallen off his horse and broken his neck). she had other dreams as well.

i dreamed about hurricane andrew a week before it happened. i dreamed about a counsin's suicide attempt a few days before. and i'm sure no one will believe this one, but it's absolutely true (everyone laughs at me when i tell them except my husband who was there when i woke up from the dream and told him)...i dreamed about 9-11 that morning before it happened. i woke up at 8:00 for work, told my husband about the dream because it was so vivid (in the dream i was a passenger on one of the planes that crashed into a tower and later realized that the woman sitting across from me was one of the victims-- i later saw her on tv). on my way to work around 9 something, i heard about it on the radio. i was in total shock.

i can't figure out if i saw the future or if my brain waves crossed with someone else's on the plane or what.

it's scary but neat i guess.

I once discovered that by standing in one particular place in my bedroom I could cause my radio to play the same radio station content a good five seconds before it normally would - it was very freaky cos it seemed like I was hearing the future, albeit the very close future.

I still don't quite know what happened. These days my suspicions tend towards a poorly synchronised pair of transmitters rather than my having radio- and time-distorting psychic powers, but that's sheer guesswork.

Oh, and my mum dreamed my granddad's death about a day and a half before it happened. And his clock stopped at the same time he did (cue renditions of "My grandfather's clock"...)

Hope that was some use. I'd be interested to hear your conclusions - you're only the second parson I've ever chatted to with a strong belief in psychic powers. In particular, any thoughts as to why, if psychic powers are real, they haven't become commonplace?

If you've read my theory, I suspect it is mostly because of disbelief. Not just in God either, but generally, nowadays, we tend to ridicule anything we have deemed "stupid" or "ridiculous". If people ridiculed the idea of growing strong muscles, I'm pretty damn sure you wouldn't see a lot of bodybuilders. Hell, people are encouraged to work out and we still don't see a lot of them. In addition, children are conditioned not to believe in anything, and since it is that phase that determins most of the natural mental discipline required to recognise and perform such acts, the child is likely to lose any predisposition they might have(unless they are born with a very strong inclination towards it). When I grew up, i stayed mostly with my grandmother, who was a bit superstitious. I never ran screaming to my parents whenever I had a weird and scary "supernatural" experience, and I believe it had a good effect, because my parents couldn't be there to tell me I "imagined" it. While some of my experiences probably were my imagination, I cannot use that excuse for all of them, as some were clearly unnatural.

I'm very interested in anything more people can say on this topic. I think a lot of times people just don't understand what is really happening and call it some kind of psychic foolishness, however I'm not convinced that that is always the case. So any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
