favorite summer things

Post by zoegirl »

Ok, this is totally just for fun....

The topic speaks for itself....although I could list some not-so-favorite things about summer (MD has such high humidity!!), there are some wonderful things about it....especially July

picking wild red raspberries in the morning while taking my dog for a walk and they are still cool from the evening! Better than store bought!

Very early morning walks to capture the 70 degree temperature and of course the sunrise...

Very late walks and seeing the sun set at 9 at night and seeing the fireflies coming up from the grass.

Hearing the dog-day cicadas start their awesome noise

Seeing a thunderstorm approach (having one right now)

Any other favorites?!?

I was recently in Michigan selling my Dad's estate. While I was there one night I thought I saw someone smoking under a tree only to realize what I had just witnessed was a firefly. Gosh I miss bugs!!! You will never see anything like that out west.

I use to live in Athens Ohio in my early days and I also missed the thunderstorms there. Huge black dense clouds, with really loud booming thunderstorms... Out here in California it is very dry. The only time we really get any rain is in the winter or early spring. It is so funny seeing what people call thunderstorms out here. More like little wimpy firecrackers, with about a half inch of rain if you are lucky.. Whoop de doo.. :shakehead: I really miss those thunderstorms back east.

These are a few of my favorite things too... Hmmm, sounds familiar. :P

Being in college, I like the more relaxed schedule (though I am taking summer classes). I like walking downtown in the late evening with it still being light out and it still being warm, and playing chess outside against the downtown chess players. I like going to baseball games (I haven't made it to one this year and doubt I will with high gas prices). I like the ability to ride my bicycle around, but I love the summer thunderstorms. Being that this is Kansas, there is also the risk of summer tornadoes too...

I'm with you on the cicadas. They're cool to listen to.

I confess: I hesitated before answering Zoegirl's question because I'm one of those weirdos who prefers winter. I know why I dislike summer (too hot, too humid, too many bugs, too many delinquents, too many girls running around in skimpy clothing*...) I can't think of anything good about summer...except my summer vacation!

That's what I like about summer: my vacation!

Absolutely I hate the humidity and much above ninety degrees is miserable.

No humidity here in California.. Only fog and fires... By the way in northern California (near the ocean) it can actually be freezing this time of year. The ocean itself is anywhere between 40 to 53 degrees.

Ugh, sounds tempting,

here in MD the temps over 90 today and the humidity is such that whatever sweat you do produce just stays tight on you, miserable. HOwever, no tornadoes (or very very few), no fires, and very few hurricanes, and very few blizzards. All in all, not so bad.

BUt that northern California's looking pretty nice.

Good thing you don't live here in Alabama. It's terrible in summer. I actually miss the snow in Colorado. I do love the thunderstorms here. Not too long ago I saw a weird one, with lightning going across the sky instead of down. It was also pink and blue, instead of the normal yellow. But it was beautiful to watch.
some things are better left unsaid, which i generally realize after i have said them
