ageofknowledge wrote: The problem I think comes when new believers are not discipled properly. It takes time to shed ingrained behaviors, addictions, responses, etc... and many simply don't realize they are in a spiritual war. A real one. So yes you can end up with a born again Christian who is still involved with old behaviors and associates that aren't going anywhere good fast. The difference is that now God is also involved in their life in important ways he wasn't before. Complicating the discussion is the Sower and the Seeds found in Matthew 13:1-23. Consider it. .
This is it. I know a couple of “Christians” who believe in Christ's glory — they readily accept his death & resurrection and the implications — and are still involved in the life, even committing the odd armed robbery. Now, this is where I say that faith alone is not enough; you have to live in Christ.
ageofknowledge wrote: Professing Christ and possessing Christ are two different things. If you really have been born of God and possess Christ, you may be an ignorant, struggling, backsliding, no good pot smoking porno watching drunken you know what at times but you'll have a God breathed desire to repent of it afterwards, have a Holy Spirit desire to defend Christ, and progress spiritually even if it's two steps forward one step back another step back three steps forward. Being properly discipled takes you from this place to where you need to be saving a new believer countless years of regret and learning the hardway, countless mistakes and offenses, and gains them a great deal of good. Unfortunately one on one and group discipleship isn't practiced much anymore in our churches. They throw the word around and come up with some Bible study courses and sermon series around it but that's as far as it goes. .
I can totally accept what you say: two steps forward, one step back is what I've been doing for a long time. But no steps forward, and thus no steps back (stagnant villains) while believing in Christ is something that surely cannot be right?
ageofknowledge wrote: Which is why I alway advocate new believers to go through a Celebrate Recovery or some other Christian 12 step program. Because its one of the few places they can find mentorship, accountability, and discipleship in the church in a real way even if they are addiction free. There is a lot more to these programs than seeing people end addiction. I hope that answers your question. Peace.
You're right, Age. You've got the right idea. But it's hard encouraging friends who you used to run with to repent and really accept Christ. I mean *really* accept Christ: living your life in Him. I found my way on my own; if someone e came up to me ¾ years ago and talked like me now I'd have dismissed them. I always believed, but I never *lived* like a true believer. I wish I could talk to some of my old friends about this without them thinking I'm a jerk, you know?

Dan you're mission isn't to save them. Only God can do that and they have to want it. You can influence them with the changes in your life and your ever increasing knowledge but you can't save them. This is a hard thing I know. When I first started following the Lord I actually went to my partners in crime and told them I had become a Christian and was done. They didn't believe me. I lived it in front of them for six months and then I moved to a new location. To my knowledge not a single one of them ever accepted Christ or changed how they were living. Not one.

You already know you weren't born in the God bubble surrounded by a loving white collar Christian mother and father that properly modeled what it means to be Christlike for you and siblings that loved God. No instead you were like me: armed or unarmed an unholy terror with a big rep in his neighborhood that believed upon Christ for his salvation when no one else would and if he hadn't it's doubtful he would be here right now.

But let me tell you a secret I learned the hard way: God loves you and me at least as much as he does them. This may be a difficult teaching to accept but I swear it to you on my life it is true. There was a time when I backslid into drinking because the devil deceived me into believing that God did not love me like he loved the ones that were in the blessing spotlight, the ones he was pouring his blessings on from birth. They had it all and all I had was pain. It was in that state I stumbled into a little church in Big Bear Lake called Believers Chapel and a spirit-filled Pastor paused the service and begin to speak in the spirit and I'll never forget what he said.

He said there was someone there that night and to make a long story short basically ran down my entire life story in detail. I looked around. There were less than 20 people in the service. It was me allright and this pastor could NEVER have known any of the things he was saying because he didn't know me from Adam. The message communicated was that God loved me (and you) very very deeply and the deck was in no way stacked for them but against me despite appearances and what the devil had been saying like it actually is here on earth. They aren't going to sail into heaven and get the yacht while we got the dingy. I honestly didn't understand that until God spoke to me directly through this man in a service and directly communicated it to me as plain as day.

That was when I realized I had allowed myself to be deceived by appearances and the devil and cleaned up my act. But I was smart and didn't try to do it alone. I went into Celebrate Recovery and got sober. Years later I'm still there and still benefiting in new ways from the fellowship. Get into a Christian 12 step group friend. You can't do it alone and the God bubble people aren't going to help you. They wouldn't stop to dial 911 if you were dying by the side of the road if it made them late to pick up their pre-paid theater tickets to Avatars. That's just the way it is. But going it alone is like being a foot soldier detached from his unit wandering through the jungle. It's no wonder you're not growing. You're lucky you haven't been taken out yet. So the bottom line is you are loved like Billy Graham but not where God wants you or where you need to be. Join a Christian 12 step group and no matter what keep going. You can thank me in a couple of years. Peace.

Nice post Age. You know what I'm getting at and I apprteciate your words. It's difficult seeing friends stuck in the same old ways. But your words have made sense. Thanks brother. Peace.

Billy Graham, "World's greatest evangelist", never saved anyone.

He didn't understand or preach the need to receive God's Spirit as detailed in scripture whereby God saves/converts people.
