If you hear any of the Phelps family speak they come across as lunatics rather than idiots. It's quite scary that a charismatic and forceful father figure/patriarch is able to drive a sizeable group of otherwise (seemingly) sane and intelligent people to these lengths.
Did you ever read the story of one of Fred Phelps' sons who left the church? Very chilling stuff...
