I've been reading the "origin of man" slides. I'm confused. Did modern man appear 100-200,000 yrs. ago, or 40-50,000?

It certainly can't be 40,000 years ago, though it might be 50,000. The Aborigines have been in Australia for at least 40,000 years.

I guess it depends what you understand by the meaning of "modern man"...
First in the Homo genus? First Homo sapiens? Homo sapiens after the agricultural revolution?
Depending on your definition it could be anywhere between 500,000 years ago and 10,000 years ago.

I guess it's hard to determine. What my school has taught me about evolution is that it is a slow process, so there shouldn't be an observable direct line between species. Yet the 'middle' species may eventually die out which gives the impression of a direct difference. i.e modern monkeys and man.
