late request....conference

Post by zoegirl »

hey guys,

I know this is a late request but I am leading a seminar on science education in DC tomorrow and I am a bit frustrated with the lack of information that the leaders have provided. I don't know how many people will be there and I'm just a bit nervous. Just pray for insight and calm....thanks!!

You will be fine. God is with you.

Prayers up.
Acts 17:24-25 (NIV)
"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. [25] And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else."

IT went very well! Thanks so much for the prayers!! It was rather an unusual experience to be in a place of being viewed as the experienced teacher. (somewhere, somehow, I shifted and I'm the wise one....when did that happen!! :-) It was primarily a discussion group and I was the facilitator but as it was for Christian schools and often it means that these are small schools and the teachers often have many classes or very little budgets so it became a bit of me giving advice. Other teachers shared some ideas as well.

It was amazing how all of them were bound to teach from CHristian textbooks which I am not a big fan of....

Well done.

Could you elaborate on why you are not a fan of Christian textbooks, Zoe?

should have elaborated....science books written by Chrsitian publishers....the earlier editions were not very well-written, often had poor diagrams, and often left out or poorly understood some of the evolutionary tenets not to mention getting some biology wrong!! (and more often than not, they were usually YEC or did a poor job explaining the different creation models). Especially at the honors and AP levels, there were none that I have found to be good at describing biology well. The ancillary materials are also better from the main publishers (DVD's, videos, CD's, lab books)

I thought it might be something along these lines. It's such a shame...

Thanks Zoe

Just wondering. Is there much work done in science, particularly initially with students where you are, on the philosophy of science?

I worked hard to develop part of the curriculum that discusses some of this, especially with regards to creation and evolution and science in general. This has deepened with AP BIo and I have been blessed with a new teacher who is very talented and has had the baton passed to her with the introductory classes. She and I have many of the same goals, so we work well together.

We can't spend too much time on philosophy, although I try hard to include it throughout the year when it can be applied.
