Isn't there a scripture that says that the knowledge of God has been put into the hearts of all mankind? If so, that would refute any argument that someone could die, infant or old person, without ever knowing anything about God. Whether they know the gospels or know the name of Jesus (which is only the angelocized version of his name) or not doesnt seem to be the pivital factor of whether they are saved. I also believe that due to the fall, we all have the knowledge of good and evil. In my understanding these things are "programmed" in us. That way even if we were to grow up completely isolated, we would have an opportunity to make the choice between God and sin.
That being said, I do not believe that infants, babies or small toddlers would go to hell if they died. If you don't have the capacity to make a choice between loving God, confessing your sins and following his ways or denying God, embracing your sins and following yourself, how could you be punished or rewarded for your choice? I think that would put these young children on neutral ground. Reading what Christ said about children, I believe their souls have a place in heaven and will enter the eternal kingdom.
