666 or 616?

Post by Kenzel »

Hey, everyone. Today, I was reading in Revelation 13:18 and noticed a footnote in my Bible that read, "Some manuscripts read 616." So, my question is, is the number of the beast 666 or 616? Why do other manuscripts read 616? Is this a contradiction?

i have never heard of that before. all i can say is that literally speaking the number 666 is in greek gramaticon code for the name of a man. spiritually the number 6 is one shy of God's number of completion 7 and the three fold repeating of the six is showing us that whoever this man is, is all about incompletion and the sinful things of mankind.

What bible had that footnote in it?

If I recall correctly, there are different manuscripts of Revelation that have different numbers, 666 or 616.
I am not sure but I think BOTH still "ADD UP" to Nero.
But I am going on memory from what I recall reading sometime back.

I was reading out of the New Living Translation when I saw it, though I'm sure it's in more translations.

Numbers are symbolic in a sense. 3 is often used in the bible as a number of completeness. 6 relates to man, as man was created on the 6th day. 7 is the number of God or perfection so 3 sevens would be a representation of the completeness and perfection of God while 3 sixes would perfectly capture the essence of mankind in their rebellion against God or as it's refered to, the spirit of anti-christ.

So why do you think there were some manuscripts that read 616? Was it just an error?

It's only 6 actually. ;)

Atomic number is a number of protons in an atom's nucleus. No atom can have such a high amount of protons, the highest is somewhere about 112-115.

In my humble oppinion I think the number of the beast is 216, 6X6X6. God's numbers are 4, 7, and 1.
