Mental Disorder

Post by Murray »

For some reason I decided to take the advice of Kristoffer and read some atheist apologetics from the iron chariot. Honestly most of the arguments seemed ridiculous and were easily debunked on some of Richard deems articles. However one point, one regarding a part of the human brain deeply interested me. This stated that it was proven that there is a part of the human brain that comes up with "fairy tales like god and other mythical creatures to explain where we came from", also it was hitting on that religon shrinks the brain and other stuff along those lines.

Kind of disturbing that there are studies that some claim "prove" these statments.

The imaginative part of the brain does come up with fairy tales. The atheist website only decided to add "and God" in there because they don't believe He exists. I don't think it's saying that the part of the brain that seeks after God is the same part of the brain that makes up fiction. This shouldn't pose a threat.

There IS a part of the brain that makes people feel awe towards forces of nature that are higher than them and feel a longing for God. But this doesn't pose a threat since one would expect God to have that longing.

so thus it would make sense that god created this part of the brain on purpose since it creates a want for him?

Yeah, I'd say so. I'd find it more disturbing if our brain DIDN'T make us want to search for God. :P

^this^ i've always thought about the bible when arguments like this are made. Rich actually has an article on the main site that addresses scientific principles mentioned in the bible. I think the bible is a good bit of proof for the existence of God. If it were made up, I don't think it would have these scientific observations

Well, the visual cortex is a part of the brain that processes visual information and the retina is part of the brain also... part of the process allowing you to see a flower. Then you have a part of the brain that allows you to feel the flower, a part of the brain that allows you to smell the flower, and a part of the brain that allows you to feel emotions about the said flower. All these parts of the brain allow you to experience a flower, but does this show you that a flower doesn't exist?

Atheists pull this stuff constantly. Christians have been preaching for a long time that God created us with an innate desire to seek Him. What does this have to do with whether or not God exists? Atheists come up with muddled points that only cloud the issue (of course I don't know the specifics of the conversation or article, to be fair). Even if all that they say on this point is true, it doesn't disprove the existence of God and frankly I don't even think it makes the existence of God less probable.

If anything, the atheist should be the one explaining how human animals who evolved from primordial soup with an illusion of consciousness and no free-will somehow are designed (oh, not designed... accidentally happened) with a brain that longs for an ultimate Creator. From a strictly common sense standpoint without getting into all the different arguments both ways, that sounds ridiculous.

Neanderthals had evidence of early religion but yet we claim to not be related to them because that would support evolution. So then wouldn’t that mean that animals without a soul worshipped our god?

Dawkins has said something similar and to this effect, "...Intelligence and tendancy to religion have a direct negative correlation."

This idea has not a shred of evidence to support it. It is another example of the anti-empirical rhetoric coming from the atheist side. I mean, do you actually believe this idea has any worth at all?

Can you link us to where the article claims it is "proven that there is a part of the human brain that comes up with "fairy tales like god and other mythical creatures to explain where we came from" "?

That Dawkins quote is kind of funny. I wonder if he's ever heard of Bach, Handel, Newton, Descartes, Pascal, DaVinci, Michaelangelo, etc, etc, etc. Seems like a good chunk of the smartest people who have ever lived have been Christians. I always get stuck on this and maybe I'm reading into it more than I should, but when people make stupid claims like his, you have to wonder why. They know it isn't true. People typically tell lies when they want to cover something up, so you have to question the reason for saying it.

You should be able to post any link you wish. Who gave you this "referral"?

Ah, but then the reply will come that these people had no choice but to be religious; ya see, the 'enlightenment' hadn't manifested itself yet! Don'tcha just love the 'high' arguments of this lot!

Okay...didn't realise this was a rule!

Murray has shared with me privately two links that apparently give evidence of what we are discussing; can he post these links up? They are not links to any atheist websites.
