You've asked if the matter of sin is "black and white or shades of grey." Your question circumscribes the answer. It is black and white; it is grey. It is grey because it is black and white. Morality is absolute. Grey areas exist because sometimes those absolutes come into conflict with one another. Is it wrong for the penniless man to steal bread to feed his family? Yes, but it is also wrong to let his family starve. Is it wrong to punch one's peer? Yes, but it is also wrong to stand by and watch that peer harass a weaker peer. Such is the nature of our fallen world.

It's not morals, at least not what we think of as morals. God's Law is beyond morality. Sin isn't an evil act, although an evil act is a sin. A sin is a failure to reach a standard. That's why they used a word that literally meant to miss a target in archery. I'm not saying morality isn't a part of it, just that this is a bit more limited.

Jesus went above and beyond what would be morally acceptable, both He and the Apostle James prayed for those who put them to death. From a moral perspective you could easily argue hatred or at the bare minimum no longer being concerned would be acceptable. Anything less than love is a sin.

Kind easy to see why we're all sinners.

Now as to the color of sin: Don't worry about it. Jesus can do a pretty good dye job. He can make them white before you know it.
