Well, it was underwhelming because of all the hype with finding out who Rey's parents are, who Snoke is, and maybe see the Knights of Ren in action. And Captain Phasma really was a let down too. I also wanted to see Luke kick some butt, except he turned out to be a alien milking hermit. Really disappointing way to kill of the main protagonist of the original three movies. I waited 34 years for Luke to kick butt, and it didn't happen.

The story was confusing at times, with things happening, and characters introduced that really were unnecessary to the story.

But the worst scene was Leia's Mary Poppins impersonation.

The Force Awakens was my favorite of all the Star Wars movies, and for the first time watching any Star Wars movie, I felt like the Star Wars Magic was gone.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate the movie. It just didn't live up to expectations.

That's understandable. I saw it with a group of friends on opening day and we grabbed dinner and discussed it afterwards. We all enjoyed the film, but getting to the specifics, we all liked the idea of Rey's parents being nobody important. Yes Disney was building up to this huge reveal, but I think it was a smarter move to go with junk traders. I had my theories, Kenobi granddaughter, maybe Palpatine, and two other people named Iden Versio and Del Meeko which were wrong. Kylo could have been lying, but he sounded sincere. Rey's reaction also seemed to confirm the truth. We also got a deeper message from Rey's parents. It doesn't matter who your parents are, you are their legacy. Also could you imagine if Rey's parents had been famous Jedi or super important? People would continue to hate Rey for being too similar to Luke.

With Snoke we did want a little more backstory, but we liked the move to kill him now. I was surprised for one, I did not see it coming. It gives the opportunity to really make the way for Kylo Ren to be the big bad of Star Wars. It also removes him from the shadow of his grandfather. Vader never truly got the chance to run the Empire. If Rey killed Snoke in Ep 9, then people would complain about the similar ending to Ep 6. I'm excited to see how Kylo takes control of the First Order.

Captain Phasma was initially a letdown, but after seeing it a second time I think I'm ok with how she was handled. She was physically intimidating and a presence whenever she was onscreen. I liked the fight between Finn and her in this movie, and she may not even be dead. Disney will probably release a book about her and maybe even Snoke, I could see them doing that to fill any backstory gaps we did not get. The Knights of Ren will be in Ep 9, and if I remember correctly it's four of them. Imagine trying to handle Phasma, Snoke, Hux (who I think got neglected in character development), Ren, and the Knights of Ren all in Episode 9. Not to mention the Resistance characters. It would have been too much.

With Luke I did want that epic lightsaber duel with Kylo, I was pleased with the fight we got though. He made Kylo look like a nerfherder as he danced around him. I'm going to guess Hamill's age was a factor in why we did not get a full on battle. I was expecting Luke to die, and then he didn't so I was happy, and then he did. You have to appreciate the shot of the twin suns though before he passed, it was beautiful. I also see this as Disney truly passing the torch to Rey as the true hero of this saga. As long as Luke was alive, we were going to want to see him, well, kick some butt . I'm sure we're going to get force ghost Luke in Episode 9.

As far as the story, the only part I felt dragged on was Finn and Rose's side quest to the casino. They were racing against the clock, but I lost the sense of urgency. I don't think Rose was important to the story at all, she was just kinda there because she caught Finn trying to escape. The message about animal cruelty and rich people felt a bit forced . I agree, Leia should have died or like my friend suggested used the force to push the fleet along before dying. I mean she is going to have to die at some point between now and Episode 9 since they said they will not CGI her in the next one.

Hopefully, Episode 9 will be a thrilling, and epic conclusion!

What do you think about the idea that in Star Wars, they are very specific about which characters have a British accent?

Do you buy the story that Daisy Ridley just sucked at an American accent, or is there something more?

Oh, I definitely think there is something more, but I don't have a clue as to what at the moment. Most British actors/actresses practice an American accent so I'm sure Daisy Ridley has one. John Boyega's American accent is very good, but he said that his accent did not work for Finn. Maybe they did lie about her parents and are planning to do a bigger reveal in Episode 9.

Surely the latest two movies are an improvement over the previous three, not having been written by Lucas? I read a big book about Star Wars a while back and it referred to Lucas being responsible for the quite wooden dialogue and often boring storylines in episodes 1-3, although he was definitely good with the special effects and so on.

Usually it's the baddies who do, like Hux. I was thinking while watching it, there must be nothing more sinister than someone with a posh British accent.

It's a pretty good science fiction movie. But a pretty bad Star Wars.

Surely the latest two movies are an improvement over the previous three, not having been written by Lucas? I read a big book about Star Wars a while back and it referred to Lucas being responsible for the quite wooden dialogue and often boring storylines in episodes 1-3, although he was definitely good with the special effects and so on.

Overall, I enjoyed the prequels. After waiting 16 years for a new Star Wars movie to come out, The Phantom Menace lived up to its hype. The Force Awakens is my favorite of all the Star Wars movies. I loved it. One of my favorite all-time movies. It definitely had the Star Wars magic.

With The Last Jedi, it was the first time I didn't feel the Star Wars magic. To me it was just an ok science fiction movie.

See, the issue with me is that I know the Star Wars Mythos and the history of the force ans Seth and Jedi so I kind of like it when they story pays attention to established backgrounds.
EX: No way in hell would Rey have ANY chance VS Ren in Force Awakens, not even close no matter how "force sensitive" she was.
Luke would not have been surprised by her existence since he is so force sensitive that he would have sensed her.

In the Star Wars Mythos Luke is bordering on Uber-Power, far exceeding Yoga.

Unless Rey was of the Anakin "pedigree" ( born of the midochlorians) then there would have been no way that she would be able to control the force that way she supposedly can ( even less so instinctively), UNLESS she was of special parentage ( both parents or at least one, an uber-power user of the force).

Sorry Paul but I think they have struck all of the Expanded Universe, or “mythos” from the official canon. Most SW fan sites call it the EU not to be confused with the European Union.

So basically, if it’s not in a movie, it’s not considered canon. It’s very simplistic, but you gotta look at how big the EU of Star Wars is. Comic books, games, novels, tv shows, Lucas has a merchandising empire to make any franchise blush.

So to include or not include certain elements from the EU is difficult to scrap together, and may offend those who don’t get selected to be part of the canon, so it’s just easier to stick with what everyone else has already seen. I.e the movies

Even if that was the case, and it probably is, even in the movies it is made clear the older someone is the more issues with them using the force.
Luke was the exception of course and we all know why.
