I think that depends on the culture. In Jesus's time, nobody would listen to a woman so they made all the priests male for the sake of spreading. I guess that attitude stuck to this day.

I'll put more here later if nobody adequately handles this, but no, it's much more then that. It goes back to symbolism in the genders of God Himself.

I haven't read all of the links you provided Tim, but I like this:
