Luther didn't want to break away from the church, he wanted to reform it. He was all for the pope, however he was forced to recant his beliefs and he didn't bend to the pressure.
Most of Luther's objections to the Church are moot in our time, he was really focused on the corruption of the church which has been taken care of by the power of the Holy Ghost.
