The problem with the eclipse idea is this-not everyone (well, not everyone who SHOULD have) experienced an eclipse. The darkness fell over a smaller area than the moon would have created.

since scientists know it was not an eclipse and historians know that it definately happened, what is the scientific explanation given for this event?

Kurieuo noted Phlegon. I don't think that account can be overlooked. After all, he even notes that a full moon followed the eclipse.
