Danny, just one question. Why did you put brotherhood with a small "b"?
Gotcha!!!!!
Tushy, Rick!

maybe I am an "idolater", but I still believe that instead of purgatory the 3rd option is reincarnation. It makes sence...... there is a reason people relive ancient memories (like patton). It is because they existed in rome, in carthage, in ancient Africa, ect... They never were exposed to Christ and they live again in a time where they have the opportunity to find him.
You guys can take bible peices that in no way are evr meant to touch on reincarnation and twist them to say "The bible is against it", but what about all those other bible verses I could take that in no way touch on reincarnation and twist them to suit my view?

Ok, I'll bite, what verses do you think support reincarnation?!?!?

Matt. 17:10-13
1 Cor. 15:51
Luke 9:7-8
Now really, why even bother getting into this with me? I'm sure we could debate for like 3 days posting verses like there is no tormorrow, but Really......why?
Am I going to hell if I hold a view that differs with mainline christianity?

Easy, Brother. I see no-one saying that.
Some might say there is a worthy debate to be had here

The issue of John as Elijah the reincarnation of the prophet is summed nicely by John the Baptist:
No I am not.

As for purgatory, I remember reading that in some Jewish teachings the soul after dying spends 12 months in sheol getting "purified" and on the 12th month goes to heaven.
Special souls like those of the prophets go directly to heaven.

Oh, we use a human calendar in heaven then? That mention of human time alone leads me to disbelief in that Jewish teaching

LMAO !
Indeed.
But Sheol is NOT in Heaven though.

I forget the chapter and verse numbers of a passage in the Book of Revelation where St. John says nothing defiled can go into heaven. A soul is something, and for Catholics, defilements would include vices, sins we still need to make up for, punishment we still need to take. . . Yes, Christ died for us to take our sins away. His sacrifice was perfect.
Say I smash your front window when I throw a brick through it. I'm sorry for what I did, I repent, and you forgive me, too, when I visit you to say "I'm sorry." After you accept my apology and forgive me, you insist that I still need to pay for the broken window. I should pay you for it, too, because you deserve payment and a new window. You shouldn't need to pay for one with your money. If people keep protecting me from the consequences I deserve, they're not helping me. They're enabling me.
Our Lord forgave the good thief, but He didn't take him off his cross, heal his wounds, and send him home. The thief still needed to take the punishment for his sin. Christ did say, "Today you will be with me in paradise. " Before he, St. Dismus, could go there, he needed to die for his crime.
Why didn't the thief go to purgatory? Maybe he was perfectly contrite, maybe he was sorry for his sins only because he knew they offended God, not because hell frightened him. Or maybe his earthly suffering on his cross helped him make amends for those sins, so he wouldn't need purgatory. Or if Our Lord wants to, He'll even cancel the time a soul would spend in purgatory.
Here's a link to a thread where I posted some links to show that ancient Christians believed in purgatory. Please see the last post on page 2.
