FWIW, I don't think they are going to hell either for committing suicide, as opposed to the common view at large.
It would be a blessing if they missed the cairns and got lost on the way back. Or if
the Thing on the ice got them tonight.

I could only turn and stare in horror at the chief surgeon.
Death by starvation is a terrible thing, Goodsir, continued Stanley.
And with that we went below to the flame-flickering Darkness of the lower deck
and to a cold almost the equal of the Dante-esque Ninth Circle Arctic Night

I find that scary you know. Because He probably doesn't intervene in any I guess. Or he does in all of them and people fail to see him as the last hope to catch on to. Both are very scary thoughts.

People are not always a good judge of what's happening when they are in depression. So you never know. I knew my cousin who jumped from a bridge because of an angry abusive father, she died later in the hospital crying that she should have never jumped. She was in pain and obviously sorry for what she did. But she died nonetheless, God did not intervene. And then I know someone who wanted to jump from a bridge but stopped at the last moment before taking the final leap because he remembered his 3 cats will miss him so he came back.

the first story is so tragic!!
maybe God reminded the second person about the cats knowing how they would respond.

that would never work for me i'm afraid.

Ironically, my cousin was a christian and the second person was an atheist, who never even thought of God.

Yeah, suicides going to hell is a lie spread through the catholic church. One of many. Suicide doesn't effect your salvation just like any other sin.

What do you mean? We can't lose eternal life if we sin? :stirthepot:

The authoritative Catechism of the Catholic Church (paragraphs 2280-2283) makes the following points about suicide:

"Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of."
"Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God."
"If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal."
"Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law."
"Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide."
"We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives."
There is no Catholic doctrine or anywhere in the catechism where suicide means damnation.... that's a lie non-Catholics promote.... y#-o y:-/

Well Mallz,

There it is in black and white. Unless you have something from the Catholic Church that contradicts what ES posted.

The Church still teaches that there is a hell, but leaves it to God to decide who should go there. And divine decisions, in this regard, are filtered through divine mercy. Tragedy at the end of this life is no sure sign of an eternal tragedy in the next.

One of our friends in New Zealand killed himself just a few months ago - he'd had a bad injury and got depressed. He'd been my husband's friend for years and had two sons at school :( I thought my husband would be really upset but he didn't take it too badly. I was pretty sad myself.
