We pray to learn who God is and what he is like... Get to know him, that he is not as the atheist think, nor like what other religions think...
You also discover things about yourself through prayer that otherwise would remain hidden and keep ruining one's life. By prayer, what ruins is exposed and healing comes in a manner supernatural that human words cannot express.
Think of prayer as talking, chatting with God as one does a close friend. Where a person can pour your out your heart, seek aid, comfort, advice, and answers from... By prayer you develop how the hear him speak to you thru the bible, thru circumstances, through still quiet voice, by the very presence of God, by gut feeling of discernment, etc and etc...
It is important to pray...
