Sorry, disagree. If someone wants to twist the very image of God, then of course there is a high likelihood that their way of relating to him will be affected in a bad way.

The author HIMSELF said he chose God to be a woman because alot of abused people would relate to a woman better than a man. That is changing God's image and making it into something you prefer it to be. Same deal as the golden calf.

If you are under a bad influence it can most certainly affect the way you see truth and reality. Whether its drugs or emotionalism or, something else.

And after that ( in the book, not sure about the movie) God shows Himself as a Man.
The issues that Mack ( the lead character) had with his father would prevented him to enter in a relationship with God if God had shown Himself as a man.
That is why God showed Himself as an African-American Woman, to not-conform to the "preconceived" notions that Mack already had about God.

The question is would God really do this?

The question isn't that since NO ONE can speak for God, I mean, God incarnated as poor desert dweller 2000 years ago.
Who on earth would have thought that ??

But we knew God was a He, same with Jesus. Papa is a she. So while I guess God could do this I wouldn't think that He'd do so.
